Through my Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) educational journey, my nursing vision expanded exponentially creating a desire not only for more knowledge and skill, but also producing an understanding of lifelong learning commitments. Ever-changing technology is leading health care into the future with a demand for evidence-based practices to ensure safe care delivery, creating more opportunities for nursing professionals to lead patients, families, and communities toward improved health practices. Without formal education involving finances prior to this educational journey, business operations proved to be the area that I lacked the most understanding of, through The Principles of Leadership and Management course as well as the Statistic course, my difficulties have decreased. I can now determine the resources needed to ensure excellent patient care, while not stretching the budgeted allowance. Because of the advancements noted in my clinical performance, accountability, leadership abilities, and business understanding, I have met Essential V: “describe how health care is organized and financed, including the implications of business principles, such as patient and system cost factors” (AACN, 2008, p. 20), Essential Vlll: “articulate the value of pursuing practice excellence, lifelong learning, and professional engagement to foster growth and development” (AACN, 2008, p. 28), Essential l: “nursing graduates with a liberal education exercise appropriate clinical judgement, understand the reasoning behind policies and standards, and accept responsibility for continued development of self and the discipline of nursing” (AACN, 2008, p. 11), and Essential ll: “apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high quality nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings” (AACN, 2008, p.14).
