Through the recent years, school budget cuts have led to the discontinuation of many classroom and extracurricular activities, including the visual and performing arts. Yet, because of this, classrooms are losing out on a very effective tool that can help aid the academic and social-emotional developments. According to Lorie Scott, Sallie Harper and Mathew Boggan, “Art integration helps students to engage in meaningful learning as well as understanding at a much more defined and deeper level” (2012, p.83). Unfortunately, arts programs are limited to only the wealthier schools and have been eliminated from those schools for the more marginalized youth including English language learners and that of inner cities (Lorimer, 2011). The No Child Left Behind Act does not test a student's overall creativity, there therefore it is not as important in the eyes of school administration (Spohn, 2008). With the push from the No Child Left Behind Act to focus solely on testing within the core subject groups (ie. Language Arts, Math and Science), school district have lost interest in funding programs that do not seem to directly affect the betterment of their students test scores (Holcomb, 2014). In 2008, Cyndey Spohn did a case study on the impact of the No Child Left Behind act (NCLB) of the arts programs in a Ohio school district. At the time of her study, thirty-two percent of the 2,500 students were classified as economically disadvantaged, which was a good comparison of National average at that time. The case study follows six educators two visual arts teacher (one high school, one elementary school), two music teachers (one elementary school, one middle school), a middle school math teacher, and an elementary school language arts teacher. Drama and dance classes do not exist within this district (2008). Spohn, first used a qualitative data collection in the form of an open-ended question interview in her research.
