Tilton is a unique leader in many different aspects. She displays positive leadership traits of intelligence, self-confidence, and honesty. She utilizes a positive leadership style of instrumental consideration by sharing her knowledge and expertise. However, negative leadership styles and traits are exhibited through her limited use of the supportive or participative style of leadership and her personality can be saw as callous and demanding.

Over the past couple of months, we discussed several traits, skills, and behaviors that have contributed to the success of both past and present leaders. Intelligence, integrity, charisma, and confidence are some of the traits that characterize many of these leaders. Interpersonal skills, oratory skills, and conceptual skills are some of the more important skills that helped to shape their leadership style. Some of these skills go hand in hand with the traits that are essential for strong leadership. Meanwhile, the behaviors that drive these leaders include inspiring and motivating others, collaboration, having a strategic perspective and trust. Combined, these traits, skills and behaviors make for effective leadership.

The author, Tom Decotils, lists three types of leaders: An appointed leader or someone who is a leader in name, an accepted leader or a leader in practice, and an authentic leader. Decotils suggests that when obtaining a leadership role, one must strive to be an “authentic leader,” whose focus is on results by moving followers forward through teamwork and insisting on personal excellence. While lots of theories of leadership have been projected, characteristics of leaders have been endless over a period and around the world. Leaders are individuals with vision and he/her view the future different from the commonly accepted view. A leader can influence change and communicate his/her vision to other staff and gain the support, and acceptance in order to implementing the vision. Leaders have established values which offer a basis for vision and passion to attain individual and organizational goals. Influence is vital to attaining change and to be grounded based on knowledge through formal schooling and proficiency (Yphantides, Escoboza, & Macchione, 2015). Tilton does express the traits of being a good leader. She shows task competence because she has been able to turn so many of the companies around and make a huge profit. Not only does she save the company and make money but she is helping other keep their jobs and not be unemployed. She has traits of character because she decides what she is going to do and she does it. She does not mess around with things that she knows are not going to work. She is honest, one of her employees said that she was just always honest about her ideas. That is a huge benefit for any owner of a company because it creates trust. Leaders defined here are affirmative, positive, optimistic, and goal-driven. They are not distracted from achieving the set goals and objectives of a company or an enterprise. They are not easily swayed by other people’s decision and opinion as they are certain that their options and opinions would achieve
In my reflections as I prepared to write this paper, I came to the realization that leadership is much more complex especially since the paper requires that I focus on a few traits. In an effort to make it simple, I wrote down the traits that came to mind and in process had over 10 important traits but an even bigger challenge was on how to narrow them down to 3 or 4 and this is the place that required a good deal of reflection. Eventually, however, I had to prioritize them since in any case; it is not possible to get a leader that has all the traits. As I thought of the various leaders who have inspired me, I noticed that while they strived to provide the best leadership by focusing on their strong points, they still had their weaknesses. To me this provided a justification for at least identifying key desirable traits and thereafter working to improve them. I did manage to settle on four traits, which for me are indispensible if a leader or a leadership is to become effective.

The early studies of leadership theories focused on the person and their behaviors, currently known as leadership trait theories and behavioral theories. It is important for organizational leaders and managers to understand what characteristics, traits and actions of an individual mark a great leader when forming a strong diverse workforce.
