Everyday life is great at making you who you are or what you have become. It is amazing how one choice or event can change someones life. This is especially true when it comes to the Vietnam War. There were so many lives that changed during this time. The Vietnam War brought us the end of the draft and instated a volunteer army which we still have to this day. This war also helped give the right for 18 year olds to vote which was a big help to Nixon’s second term as president. With this said the Vietnam War has greatly affected America and Tim O’Brien is one of those people. He was born on October 1, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota and was then raised in a small town called Worthington. Here he played little league, did magic tricks, and spent most of his youth in the county library reading about the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Little did he know he would soon have his on adventure. O’Brien discovered a major part of his life in this library as well. This is where he came up with the idea to write his first novel or short story. At the age of nine, O’Brien discovered this book called "Larry of the Little League.” Larry in this story was one of the best little league player young O’Brien has ever read about. This inspired him to write his own story about himself being the best little league player that ever lived. He called his book “Timmy of the Little League,” since he was nine his title wasn't that creative. But this imagination that you can be anything you want gave O’Brien new hope to become something else. As a young teen O’Brien never did enjoy Boy Scouts, the outdoors, or guns. His mother, an elementary school teacher, and his father, an insurance salesman and World War II Sailor Veteran, both work full time jobs. O’Brien attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and received good grades. He was heavily involved in his College and was elected student body president. In 1968 he graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and proceeded to become a writer. O’Brien was also inspired to become a writer after listening to his father’s stories from World War II
