How did telecommunications advance from the end of the 1800’s to the end of the 1900’s ?
THESIS
Telecommunications have revolutionized business and communication between people.
Since the beginning of time communication has always been a crucial part in our societies for development. Without communication there was no or little development, people did not know what was out there, and what was available. It is communication that has developed our large and very intricate societies with different institutions communicating for the welfare of our people. People have always strived for contact with other people. Man wants to know his surroundings and with the arrival of telecommunications

Certain battles were lost due to the rejection of this technology and the communication failed. It was not until after the war that the telephone was put in use privately. But the astounding thing is that the means of communication reached almost anybody, anywhere, if only they wished to pick up. This helped business a lot, and it allowed companies to grow, along with social structures within a society.
Then came radio, which allowed people to reach the masses. Whether or not it was propaganda, a weather warning or an advertisement it still reached millions of people, and this had a profound effect on the commercial sector. It also allowed society to organize itself for war or other national events, because these were issued on the radio, this was the most effective means to reach the population of a country, therefore it became a very powerful political and economical tool.
Then with the arrival of satellites, Television arrived where one could both view and hear. This is in fact one of, if not the most important medium we have today. People with a TV can stay up to date with events that happen in every part of the world, sometimes even as they are happening, that is in ‘real time’. The TV is the leading mass medium but it cannot stimulate our need to be interactive with the medium,
Telephone popularity saw an increase in the early 1900's. The telephone began to appear all over the place. The telephone began to be looked upon as a necessity, "By this time the telephone was settling into national consciousness as a fixed and permanent part of American life."2 The telephone allowed people to interact with other types of individuals, and this ability intrigued the American public. The telephone made it possible for contact to take place with people who normally can not because of being apart by large distances. People want to communicate quickly with others, and the telephone makes this happen. By this time the telephone was not a luxury good, but necessary for survival. Cities especially, saw the telephone as an essential part of society; "Literally telephone service is a life-and-death matter to the citizens of every urban community in America."3 Although the telephone was popular in cities, it was surprisingly popular in the rural Midwest. The telephone created a need to know what took place in the world. The Midwest was not as densely populated and the telephone developed an excellent way to communicate the news of the day amongst surrounding communities. Before, one would have to rely on the news spreading via word
During the mid-1900's, daily newspapers and magazines were important sources of information. In the 1940's, the radio supplied another source of media and broadcast to the masses. Individuals spent their evenings tuned into radio stations to listen to accounts of the ongoing war. During this era, daily newspapers were still accessible and still utilized by most people. In the 1950s, television was invented and subsequently became a primary media communications tool. The information broadcast through television was a combination of information from the radio and the daily newspaper. In 1962, satellites offered access to world news. From that point to now, Americans have expanded mass communication to include smart phones and the Internet, as new technology
Nowadays people can use other resources in order to know what is going on in everyday life. If people need to know what the weather is going to be, they just look on the news rather than actually going outside. In “The Pedestrian,” Leonard Meade thinks of his neighbors’ houses as “tomb like houses, ill-lit by the television light where people sat like the dead” (Bradbury 2). They didn’t need to communicate with people because they could just watch the TV and find anything the need to find out. People can also just google if they need something. If I need to know what something means I just google it rather than asking a teacher. They can watch the TV and know what is going on rather than talking about it with someone face to
Technological improvements saw an increase in the ease of communication and transportation. In terms of making a big world smaller, the 1870s saw two of America’s most famous inventors make their mark: Alexander Graham Bell, with the telephone, and Thomas Edison, with the electric light bulb. Before Bell, the primary means of communication was with a pen and
Imagine you lived back in the 1900s. What is one thing that you would miss from today? Most people would probably say wifi or their phones. Technology is the biggest difference from back in the 1900s to today. Cell phones, entertainment, and even weapons have changed dramatically because of technology.
By 1850s, when the telegraph use was finally optimized for general public and the world, it altered how we practiced politics as nation and thus fueling a more globalized world. Communication
Throughout history, there are key inventions such as the telephone and the computer that transcended the way people communicate and relay information with each other. The invention that started this wave of faster and faster communication, the telegraph, proved to be revolutionary, paving way to many of these efficient methods of communication in the United States. During the late 19th century, the United States faced significant transformations culturally and socially with the help of the Telegraph. The telegraph proved to play a significant role in the United States’ Civil War, improving the way the military was planning and executing its strategies. This proved to be even more impressive, because of the adversities military telegraphers
Imagine what would happen if all forms of electronic communications vanished one day. This would most likely effect many people. Then think of what it was like before electronic communications. All messages took longer to send. Then the telegraph came out, the first form of electronic communications.
Everyone wanted to do their part and be helpful in anyway possible. With the help of the media informing everyone of the problems and solutions, people could start counteracting these problems and doing what might not have been able to be accomplished without this tool. Also, several times in history, there have been things that people don't like about the way people or things have been treated. So, with the coverage of the media, people can be informed and they can make sure that they have a voice in the things that are happening so that the bad things can hopefully be
Everything ranging from politics, economics, sports, festivals etc... Was announced through the media. Many people really relied on the media for explanations for the things going on in the world which in reality left the audience oblivious on the actual truth and the reality of things. Also, it was an efficient way for corporations and businesses to advertise their products to the consumers. Consummation was excessive at the time, the world was consuming more than what a supposed regular human being should be consuming. This shows the many corrupted values the media had. One being to always remind people to consume and to always buy products that people really didn’t need at the time and the other, as mentioned before, to keep people distracted with false details on world wide problems. All of this to keep everyone asleep and to keep people from questioning things as it would come in the way of the schemes the corporations and elite forces was initiating. The media machine had such a powerful platform, it was almost an unthinkable situation to get people to stay away from it as it would always exists and influence peoples motifs. It was the most manipulative control system to ever be made in the
One monumental advancement was launched on November 2nd 1920 when “The first Commercial radio station was born, and a new era had dawned”(Radio). The radio became the fastest way to share important information and connected
This invention had a huge impact on the war and on long distance communication in general. It was the first machine that could communicate long distances in mere minutes. This in turn revolutionized the war. General who were many miles away could send directions and orders to troops in seconds. People could not communicate letters in the civilian world instead of having to wait weeks
After the invention of the electric grid, inventor Alexander Graham Bell created the first telephone. This device allowed people to communicate instantaneously without having to wait days, weeks, months, and sometimes years before hearing back or finding out their message was not delivered or miscommunicated. Engineers now have made the telephone advance enough to communicate wirelessly to anyone, anytime all around the world. Forms of transportation have incorporated these technologies to allow communication with the company, whether the vehicle is stolen, in-case of a car accident or any issue. Furthermore, they have developed the internet which allows people to video chat and translate, to speak and learn new languages in a convenient way; all for free. This method of communication has created countries that are diverse and majority know and respect peoples cultural, ethical, and religious background. The internet has allowed information from all over the world to be gathered in one convenient accessible place. Even allowing world news to be posted and heard must faster than ever before. Students have been given the ease of studying notes from the internet and even taking tutoring classes or assistance from their teachers over the internet via email. This also helps the environment by decreasing the amount of paper needed. With the use of technology engineers from around
Communication is the exchange of information and feeling or ideas, which allow the majority of people to get the news of all sides. In addition, we are used the communication every day to let people know what we are doing or thinking even feeling which people are received that by voice, picture or chat. Moreover, communication technologies have made it simple to communicate to friends in the other side of the world by calling them using mobile phone, e-mailing them and writing in our web pages using social networks, such as Face book, Twitter or Messenger. Additionally, many other recourses are used by the majority of people to keep in touch with the world, which they can watch television or listen to the radio
Remember the days of the Old West? The women walked around with their parasols or rode in a horse drawn carriage and the men rode fast and furious on their horses. Everything you needed was right there in town: the saloon, the general store, and the barber. When one needed to get somewhere, they would walk. If they needed to travel far, there were steam-powered locomotives. As towns and cities grew larger, it was not so convenient to walk everywhere. There was a need for a machine that could get us around to where we had to go. Technology was becoming a bigger part of the times and the machine we now know today as the automobile was invented.
