Time Out, Consistency, Role Modeling, and Rewards
It is important to remember first and foremost the goal of time outs, role modeling, and rewards. By raising a child with consistency they will sooner develop socially acceptable behavior appropriate for their age. It is vital to provide consistency when children are young, as they will follow this example throughout life. They will learn that “no” means “no” but most importantly they can learn what “non negotiable” means in this age group. By providing a positive role model and providing rewards, the need for punishment (or time out) should naturally decrease. This is one of the factors that may influence bedwetting (enuresis). Enuresis consists of 2 varieties, primary and secondary. Primary is that of a child who has never woke up dry while secondary is a child who has been dry at night but returned to night time wetting. In most cases studies reveal no medical reason for the bedwetting. It is recommended that children abstain from liquids after the dinner meal and void just prior to going to bed for the night. Bladder conditioning can be explored, which is for the child to go as long as possible during the day without using the bathroom. It is believed that this will potentially increase the bladder size and thus eliminate night time enuresis. While working to a goal of night time dryness, it may be helpful to use absorbent products sold as “pull-ups” or “goodnights” to help the child feel grown up (and therefore not using “diapers”) but also diminish the anxiety of waking up in a soaking wet bed. As a possible last resort there are night time alarms, which are commercially available and prescription drugs. When selecting toys for preschool children, Nurses may advise to avoid stereotypes of “boy toys” and “girl toys” so children may develop their own likes and dislikes. Toys should be study and safe and encourage creative and imaginative play. It may be best to avoid electronic toys and tablets during this age; however it is a very personal choice for parents to make. If parents choose to allow preschool children to utilize tablets, time should be limited and the games should have an educational element.
It is also vital that boys and girls be allowed to play out of doors to strengthen their running, jumping, and swinging muscles. Outdoor activity will also help children burn off energy from being inside for extended periods of
