By tracking my time for one week I discovered I have more time than I think. My 168 hour week was broken down into seven categories; maintenance, work, education, family/friends, goof off, personal and group time. In viewing the total hours spent in each category I see that I need to change my priorities.
The maintenance category consumes forty-four percent of my time. I found many “time stealers” that distract me from doing what I planned (Facebook, texting, phone). In addition to time stealers, I found that I’m easily distracted from one task to another. An example would be while loading the dishwasher I notice a smudge on a kitchen window, so I’ll clean the window, well I can’t just clean one kitchen window; I need to clean them all.

The amount of time spent on education will fluctuate weekly due to the complexity of the assignments. The percentage of time spent on education is acceptable, no change is needed.
Currently zero time is spent in the group time category. Working full time and going to school I do not have the energy to dedicate any time to participate in a group. I spent six years as a volunteer at a local animal shelter socializing animals, chairing fundraisers and being on the Board of Directors; due to burn out I decided to resign. I enjoy volunteering and view it as an important part of one’s life; I plan to dedicate time to the group category after this semester.
Goof off time represents ten percent of my time. The main activities represented in this category are surfing the internet and watching T.V. My return on investment for watching T.V. is very high. I tend to watch documentaries and historical based programs such as Victoria on PBS. Unfortunately I spend far too much time aimlessly surfing the internet, the consequences of which is wasted time that could be better spent in another category. To help me lower the amount of wasted time on the net, I’ve put a sticky-note on my computer that reads, “ Time
My two biggest time wasters that prohibit me from staying on task are my phone and sleeping.
Time is a valuable resource, and in fact, some people get more out of their time than others. Time is a scarce resource meaning that there is not enough of the resource available to satisfy all of the ways I want to use it. Due to the fact that it is scarce, this means that my time must be allocated in such a way that I can get the most out of it. Being a full time student, working part-time, and playing college athletics is a tough feat. In fact, most of the time I struggle in deciding what to do and when. What I choose to do is a demonstration of my value system and some things are valued more than others.
I think that I could improve my time management skills by making sure I limit my distractions. Facebook is a big thing I like to check periodically so if I block out a little bit of time throughout the day to have that moment to check facebook or phone a friend or family; my thought is that hopefully by the time I am ready to do homework, I will have gotten that all out of my system which will allow me to keep on task to finish the assignment or project. Another thing that helps me that I should do more often is find a place with the environment that will help me focus on my tasks and not be distracted. I find that a lot of times when I work on my school work at home I want to do other things such as clean house. When my house is a mess I find myself stepping away from the computer to clean it. So when I have to do a assignment it would be best if I can leave the house to finish up my assignment. I think it would also benefit me to plug in some time for myself to have fun. This is something that I don't do often and have a hard time finding the time to do, but I feel that if I did that it would help me to stay focused on tasks when that time comes and to not be so
From family commitments to pressing work deadlines. From social engagements to paying bills. For many of us, free time is one of our most prized possessions, and we value all our time highly.
Another goal that I have set forth for myself is to make long lasting friendships during my final year in undergrad. Finally, another goal that I have is to limit my spending on foolish things such as fast food. I would love to cook more and incorporate new foods in my taste palette. Overall my time use is congruent with my goals. I feel this way because although I did not spend most of my time doing homework, it came second on my time record sheet. I am proud to say that I spent 21 hours completing my homework assignments. Me taking the time to complete my homework assignments during a week that I felt like I didn’t have much time to complete anything, is self-fulfilling in of its
I have chosen to do the stop distractions challenge. The stop distractions challenge I chose, because I feel I need to improve on my time management and cut back some of my time zappers. My distractions are T.V, Cell phone use is a huge time zapper and web surfing are my three major distractions. Using a log to track the amount of time I spend on my distractions would help me to determine what time of the day I will set for myself to get on my phone or watch T.V. having only 2 hours to give to each distraction per week will be the hardest part of the challenge, but I intend to budget wisely. I hope to gain back a lot of free time after completing this challenge, which will allow me more time to study and complete other daily tasks. My overall
I noticed that I spent more time than I had originally realized during my free time and also spent a larger amount of time on coursework. Since regularly I do have work to consider, I have realized that I needed to make some changes based upon those three days. My first change is that given that with work considered my free time is roughly about 3 on a shorter day, I decided to dedicate a portion of that time towards reading so that I can read a
I have always faced various challenges when it comes to managing my time. Some of the challenges I have are procrastination, knowing my priorities, and getting my priorities in order. I am very easily distracted and distractions are what causes me to procrastinate. I will tell myself that I will do something in five minutes, but then those five minutes go by and I tell myself another five minutes and so on. Putting time off is a way of telling myself that my priorities are not
There is a wide percentage of Americans struggling to maintain time, which causes these similar issues and circumstances as well. “Eating well and exercising (54 percent each) are ranked at the bottom in terms of importance when compared with other aspects of well-being, including good family relationships (76 percent), managing stress (61 percent), getting enough sleep (60 percent), good friendships (60 percent) and doing well in career or studies (59
Wasting free time is my biggest downfall. The average American spends 40 hours a week watching TV (Chambers, 2015). while this is especially applicable to my situation, since it is fall, the season of football, and I am a football fanatic.SO while I recognize that I have plenty of free time, I try to incorporate my hobbies, but fall short with time estimation. Although future time estimation may influence planning efficiency, a plan can only lead to efficient time management if carried out successfully ( Waldrum, McDaniel, 2016).
It is safe to assume that at any given time, you will struggle to make time for yourself amid your busy schedule. There are too many things to do, places to be, and people to tend to. What ultimately happens is that you end up neglecting the most important person which is YOU.
The first thing that you need to do is determine what priority level each of your tasks happen to be at for you. This means that you need to decide what priorities are topping your charts. Then, you’re able to block time out for these particular tasks. You should be able to focus on getting your number one priority completed without any other distractions.
Identifying possible factors that may interfere with your goals can help to reduce things that may waste your time, distract you, or make you less effective. Is it important to identify the ways in which we use our time so as to firstly, be effective in choosing the correct objectives to focus on, and secondly, to then concentrate on how efficiently we are meeting our objectives. This means appropriately prioritising tasks.
In the words of Dawson (2004), "time management is all about taking control of your own time." In seeking to help adult learners regain control of their time, Dawson comes up with a number of effective time management strategies. Some of these strategies are highlighted herein. To begin with, Dawson (2004) recommends that one drafts a list of all those activities whose timing cannot be altered. These activities which Dawson refers to as "non-negotiable" activities could include attending lectures, private study and other important undertakings such as picking
Now that I have identified the problem and its causes, I need a plan to overcome it and rid it away. Being effective at planning my time ,taking responsibility for developing realistic planning by using my knowledge, finding enough time to do extra activities and practice regularly sport to don’t manage my time poorly any more. By actively managing my time I use my time to create more chances to succeed, thinking flexibly on managing my time like balance between time for work and time for fun.
