Times Up Donald Trump. Harvey Weinstein. Kevin Spacey. We have been used. We have been violated. We have been objectified. Women have long been thought upon as less than. Women have had to go through so many obstacles in our lives that men will never have to experience. 34% of girls under the age of 12 get sexually abused. I know what that’s like. I’m 16 years old and I’ve been sexually assaulted twice. Times up on staying quiet. I chose not to be quiet. I am quite vocal about my views because I had no one who was there for me. I’ve only told a few people my story, however, I believe it’s time to tell all. If anyone has been through a similar situation as myself, if you have no one to help, to tell, to run to, I’m here for you. As an avid vocalist, I get told that being a feminist is wrong; that feminism puts women superior to men. Feminism isn’t about making one sex superior to another, it’s finally having true equality. Equality that women have NEVER truly had. I believe it’s about time that we, woman, back up others when it comes to the issue that has been haunting the United States for centuries. Times up on being treated less than. …show more content…
When I was younger, my opinions on matters I understood were rejected. They treated my comments like the spoiled milk in the back of a fridge, wondering why it never got drank; why it never got used. As I became a tween, my phases didn’t matter, the pressure of my parents looming divorce didn’t matter, the hands violating my soft, warm skin didn’t matter. I was only 9 when the first one happened. The second, 14. You never think these things are going happen, then they do. As a kid, my only concern was if my twin brother was having as much fun as I was. Now, I worry about walking to my car in the dark, by myself, after I get out of my after school activities. Times up on being treated as something beneath
Men are granted more power than women, making it difficult for women’s voices to be heard. It is the story of Silence that proves that one’s true nature does not dictate one’s capabilities. This ideology has lead the Women’s Right’s movement and caused gender-based oppression to decrease. Woman can now be seen in positions of power.
Rebecca Solnit’s article focuses on the ways male violence negatively affects women. Harassment from men directed at women keep women from speaking up, and many women are living in constant fear of male violence. They live in a constant state of fear because they are aware male violence is taking place around them. Women are also afraid of potential male violence because men openly express authoritative behavior. She explains men feel they have the validity to control and abuse women. Specifically, a man will approach a woman with the expectation that the woman will return the man with a sexual favor. For example, “a woman was stabbed after she rebuffed a man’s sexual advances while she walked in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood late Monday night…”
In the past couple of weeks, there have been a string of sexual assault allegations against several famous and powerful men. While going through the details of these allegations, I began noticing a distinct pattern, these men have been committing their crimes for years. How they were able to commit their crimes for years, decades even, unscathed was no accident. Why is it so hard for women to be believed and listened to when they speak about the abuse that they have experienced at the hands of men? And how can we move towards true equality between men and women?
People believe that man do not get rape, so when they come out saying they have been abused, people ignore them, and do not believing their story. Just like we discussed in class, a man was rape and reported it, no one took action on. One said that he should be proud that a women wanted that kind of attention from him (McDougle’s words). As for women they society ignore them because they believe that they are looking for it, by the way they dress, or the way they carry themselves. Women should not categories and arraste just because of the way they are dress. Moreover males should not be ignored just because they are man. They have values too, and they should not be put down. That is why most men rather keep it to themselves when they have been rape, rather share it with the public, because people are going to think they are lying. Some ways that I believe that can reduce this problem is first by giving man more support, and most of all teach the public that man can also be raped, it is not only women. Furthermore, women should not be categorize as a sex item. They should get respect no matter how they dress, or look
The women's movement of the 1970’s has not failed to liberate American women. Throughout history women have been silenced and taught to shrink themselves so that they do not overshadow men. History has shown that women created cures and inventions but they weren’t good enough until a man came long and gave his input. Often times even without his input the men were given credit for a womens work because society viewed it as more valuable. All of the feminists who created movements and used their voices even when they were encouraged not to helped pave the way for women today.
Fortunately this is not the case for all women. I’ve decided to tell the stories of women who have had the courage to take a stand against the oppressive men in society. All of these stories regardless if they are fictional or real life events, should all serve as an inspiration to those who feel oppressed. A real life event that I will discuss are the victims of Bill Cosby and the legal actions taken against him. The other four stories are fictional, 3 of them being
Although with the high percentage of “feminist acts” surrounding every corner of social media they should see the up and downs yet, all the women deserve the recognition of being strong and independent and only few truly deserving it. Calling the title rather than earning it, women have not yet been acknowledged for this act. Asking for that higher position in society yet depending on the male population
I had never really thought about what it meant to be a feminist, it was just a role I had unquestionably assumed as I consider myself to be an advocate of women empowerment. After last week’s readings, I began to question what exactly does being a feminist entails, and why the label carries very different meanings and connotations to different people. There is a common misconception that feminists are radicals, seeking to be superior to men. This is rooted in the fact that women today do not face the same struggles as its predecessors; namely, the inability to vote, work, study, and own property, to name a few. It is true that I have more rights and privileges than women such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth,
Not many are strong enough to speak out. People like us usually aren't brave enough to argue towards something, even though they strongly believe in it. Despite that, there is a woman, a fearless speaker, who spoke up until her death to make the world a better place. Born on June 27th, 1869, Emma Goldman is the leading figure of American feminism and an influential anarchist in history. From a young age, she experienced poverty or noticed much violence towards women. This led to her standing out as an anarchist she is known today. All her life was about conflicting with poverty, freedom of speech, birth control, violence, women's rights, and government's military preparations. She dedicated her life towards opposing and never gave up even
Coming from a country in a part of the world where being misogynistic is incredibly prevalent and often encouraged, I have witnessed and been around many acts of sexual harassment as well as victims of it. At a very young age, I learned that my first cousin was sexually harassed by her husband’s brother when they were alone and that is when I learned the true horrors of the world. Everyone knew the truth about what happened, but no one helped my cousin, not her husband, her father, or her brothers. Sadly, Where I’m from, a third world country, is not the only place things like this happen. There are acts of sexual harassment even in countries like America in big corporations such as Hollywood. We’ve learned about these many acts through recent
One in five women and one in seventy-one men will be raped in their lifetime. This type of statistic is nauseating. Senator Sanders states in his article “Man-and-Woman”, “Many women seem to be walking a tightrope now. Their qualities of love, openness, and gentleness were too deeply enmeshed with qualities of dependency, subservience, and masochism.” Within this article, sexual abuse and gender normalities are the big topics. Some men see women as an object or a toy that they can play with. However, women are needed so much more than just to fill the desires of a man. Another problem that not only grown women, but young girls face everyday is the event of cat calling. The Huffington Post’s Joan Marie states, “The first time I was catcalled, I was ten, at a family friend’s barbeque in a swimsuit, It was a drunk dad, who thought he was funny.” The woman in this article explains that she still remembers every inch of her body feeling hot with shame as everyone at the party looked at her. Women are blamed for these types of incidents. The man should have been the one who was ashamed, as a father of a child close to her age. Women continuously blame themselves for the traumatizing things that are said and done to them. Furthermore, there needs to be more support for women and help them to understand that they have a right to their body and it is not something to be ashamed
I had always wanted to be a part of the feminist movement (often called the Third Wave of Feminism) but found it hard to do so in a heavily patriarchal society. I realized that the easiest way to be a part of the movement was to just dive in headfirst. I joined the Feminist Club on campus as well as the Alpha Phi Fraternity. These two organizations stoked the fire that I had within me to fight for equality. In the world today, I look to many powerful women as my inspirations. When Hillary received the nomination for the Democratic Party, I was bursting with joy. Even if she does not become the president, there are many other women who now have the example to follow to the White House. I never realized how desperately I needed their combined efforts to shape me into a stronger woman until I was a part of
Every day, women experience violence at the hands of men. Somehow, in our society, even rape and assault have fallen into a moral grey area. With the controversy surrounding [that], few pay much thought to the less extreme, but far more common acts of molestation. While smaller attacks are considered innocuous by many, they too can have long lasting effects of and we as women have no way to ever escape.
One might often ask what importance is there to fight against rape. Statistics have shown that the pillage of a person’s personal space have been steadily increasing since before the 1950s. Every two minutes, there is at least one American being sexually assaulted. (www.rainn.org ‘Sexual Assault Statistics”) these are just two of the millions of statistics that have been taking away many people’s privacy, natural rights, and their trust in others. Instead , due to rape culture women are commonly taught that ‘boys will be boys” or [concerning being bothered or harassed by the opposite sex] “ that just means they like you!” rape culture not only teaches women that its normal to be sexually assaulted , but it teaches them not to bother to correct the rapists, just to take it. In news, press reporters mourn the athletic career of two highschoolers’ who raped and nearly killed a 15 year old girl rather than mourning the victim. The only way to stop these situations from ever happening again is to stop
Even though women are becoming much stronger in every way. Women still get abused today.
