Located between the Banda and Timor Sea, lies a small nation called Timor-Leste a.k.a. East Timor, which is part of an island known as Timor. In 1520, the Portuguese were first settling into Timor; a little before the year 1860, Portugal and Netherlands fought for the land of Timor but with an 1860 treaty, it divided Timor into West and East Timor. East Timor was given to the Portuguese while West Timor belonged to the Netherlands. After 455 years of Portugal colonizing East Timor, Portugal suddenly withdrew their rule which lead the island to be completely vulnerable. On July 7th, 1976, East Timor had declared their independence; but nine days later, Indonesia (West Timor), invaded and annexed East Timor. Although many of the countries didn’t …show more content…

Although, Timor-Leste is a small nation, the population is said to be “by no means homogeneous” but is rather “highly heterogeneous” where a small fraction of the East Timorese citizens are not ethically East Timorese (Molnar). Most of the foreigners, like Chinese merchants or descendants of Arabs and Indonesians, that live in Timor-Leste have married an East Timorese. What really makes East Timor stand out more than other counties is that, it is one of the few who do not use mobile devices, televisions, or radios back in 2004-2006, but only used telephones. (“East Timor”). There were approximately 68 people out of the entire population who were internet providers and about 1000 East Timorese citizens who used internet (“East Timor”). In Molnar’s book about East Timor she stated that her “current ongoing ethnographic work on the Atsabe Kemak culture also uncovered the strong presence of animalistic beliefs and practices” …show more content…

Bush was president, he told the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert to report to Congress that on “March 2nd, 2001 [he] provided information regarding the continued deployment of U.S. Armed Forces in support of East Timor’s transition to independence.
