Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois, a French scientist, in 1811. Courtois was extracting sodium and potassium compounds from seaweed ash, and when the compounds were removed, sulfuric acid was added to further process the ash. After too much acid was added my mistake, a violet colored cloud erupted from the mass. Solid Iodine was then created when the gas from the eruption condensed on metal objects in the room. The initial plan for this element was to be used against humans to kill them, but ironically turned out to be the most fortuitous accident in medicine history.
