Title Languages, colors, voices, shapes, sounds, objects, speaking, hearing, seeing are all senses of the human body. Imagine a child never hearing his or her mother’s voice. Or seeing the kitchen table they eat at every day. Helen Keller experiences all of this. She cannot hear or see what is around her. She cannot even communicate with her family. As one of the protagonists she lives in total darkness and strives to learn the world around her. The only way she can do this is with the help of the other protagonist Annie Sullivan. Annie is a young woman who was blind but had many surgeries to restore her eyesight. Trying to help Helen, Annie comes across many barriers from the antagonists who are in the world around them…show more content…
Disabilities and how society looks at people are the antagonists. The disabilities affect Helen by making her blind and deaf, which leads her to being mute. So it is very hard for Helen to understand the way of talking when she cannot hear or see how to do it. Annie was blind but had surgery to fix it. Her knowledge of being blind will help her teach Helen how to learn. However she has to overcome the disabilities that Helen has and try to figure out how to teach her language. Society contributes a huge amount of obstacles for Annie and Helen. Society had put Annie and her brother James in an asylum for their disabilities. It sees that these people should be put away and never heard of again. The asylums were dirty and ill taken cared of due to the society thinking disabled people did not need the same things as normal people. James Keller and at times the Captain believe an asylum is the best place for Helen. The conflict between the protagonists and antagonist is being Disable vs. Society. This is symbolized by Helen who is disabled and Annie who was once disabled and during this time society would look down upon the disable. Society would want to hide them away from the rest of the world. Helen’s family was thinking of putting her in an asylum because she was disabled and thought to be mentally handicapped. Annie was put in asylum with her brother James who also had a disability. The people in the asylums were forgotten about
