The main theme of London's "To Build a Fire," is man versus nature. The unnamed man wanders into the forest with a native dog hoping to make it out alive. Unfortunately the wrath of mother nature prevents him from getting any further leaving him dead. "The theme consists of a double movement - downward toward disintegration and death and upward toward reintegration and life, but life greatly enriched" (Peterson, 15). The theme in the story is in a downward shift. Throughout the entire story, everything is going downhill. For example, the one upward shift in the story is when the man gets a fire starting to keep him warm. Although this all changes when the fire is doused by snow falling on the fire. This being the reoccuring downward shift.
To Build a Fire is a story is a perfect example of the writing genre Naturalism. It contains elements like survival depends on instinct, nature is impersonal, man lacks free choice, and heredity and environment direct and influence our lives. In the story nature is the antagonist and is very impersonal, as it is in life. The dog

Readers of all ages, literature lovers, and book fanatics often find conflicts within their own lives just as the characters of the stories they read do. Some are able to find a way to overcome and conquer, while others get stuck behind or can not find a way to beat them. In Jack London’s short story called “To Build a Fire,” the main character conflicts with mother nature, who keeps tearing him down at every possible point. The main character, who is only referred to as the Man, is battling his way alone through the harsh temperatures of the Yukon. On this journey he runs into many obstacles and challenges. The Man does not listen to the advice he is given, leading to his inevitable death at the end. The most notable theme London builds
In Jack London's "To Build a Fire" we see a classic story of man against nature. In this story, however, nature wins. One reason that this is such a compelling and engrossing story is the vivid descriptions of the environment the nameless main character endures. Plot and characterization are brief, and the theme is simple. Yet this story is still a very popular story, and it has a mysterious quality that makes it great.
One theme from “To Build a Fire” is to pay attention to animals instincts. The man is determined and doesn’t pay attention to the dog, he clearly does not want to continue. You can tell this because whenever he was about to go over the lake the dog backed up and the man pushed him onto the lake. In paragraph 13 it says, “The dog did not want to go. It hung back until the man shoved it forward…”.
In “To Build a Fire” there is two ways the theme is developed. Always listen to people who are trying to help you, because something may go wrong. One way the theme is developed is by the man almost freezing to death. Another way the theme is developed is the man not knowing how to build a fire. Both ways the theme is developed is to try to help the reader understand that the man is retarded.
One theme from “To Build a Fire” is that you should listen to others that are wiser then you. The old man warned the young man shouldn’t go out in the wilderness alone. But the young man still didn’t listen it was below -50 degrees. The young man didn’t listen to the old man when he said that the weather is dangerous because when you are alone, things can go wrong quickly and there is no one with you to save you.
In the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, there are three principal themes. They are respecting nature, and considering results of actions. The main theme, or universal truth, is heeding warnings. The themes are shown through the character and his actions. The main character in the story had an attitude that prevented him from heeding internal and external warnings. He did not respect nature's power, and therefore he paid with his life. His attitude was arrogant and careless.
“To Build a Fire” is a short story written by Jack London. It is viewed as a masterpiece of naturalist fiction. “To Build a Fire” features a miner who is traveling to the Yukon Territory with a dog as his companion. The miner is the protagonist and the dog companion is called the foil. The dog plays off of the traits of the protagonist. “The central motif of “To Build a Fire” concerns the struggle of man versus nature.” (Short Story Criticism) The most argued point in the short story is the reason of the protagonist death. “Some critics believe that it was his lack of intuition and imagination that lead to his death, while others say that he dies because of panic.” (Short Story Criticism) The protagonist in “To Build a Fire” struggles in
“To Build a Fire” by Jack London is a short story about a man traveling through the Alaskan Yukon to meet up with his friends for lunch. The author keeps the character nameless and refers to him only as “The Man” which is used to show a connection between humanity and nature. The story shows the hardships the man goes through to get to his destination through the Alaskan Yukon, yet unfortunately doesn’t make it. The conflict is a man versus nature theme which contrasts strong and direct relations of the hardships in nature. Throughout this analysis, I am going to explore the conflict between the man and the merciless nature he has to go through before his death.
In "To Build a Fire," Jack London expresses his perspective of the multitude of greenhorns who flocked to the yukon in a rush for gold. It is evident that he believed that these newcomers were too inexperienced and blinded by gold fever to survive the trip. Like many of them, "the Man" is driven by his own foolish ego to act irrationally and to not follow wise advice. Though his consience continually nags at him, his ego-driven way of thought keeps pushing him blindly forward. The Man is not only representative of other fortune hunters like himself, but he also repersents every person on this planet. All of us, at some point in time, pushed our own consience aside and followed our own selfish ego.
Sometimes everyone feels like giving up, and the only thing a person can rely on is his will to survive. Giving up is admitting defeat, in every circumstance. In the story by Jack London, To Build a Fire, the main character learns a hard lesson of reality, when he meets his fate. The result came about because of many factors, mainly the man’s lack of psychological perserverance on the journey, as well as the harsh temperature and surroundings. If there was any hope for the man to survive these conditions, it would rely wholey on his persistance and motivation. The man expected his fate after it was too late to change it, weighing all the variables and realizing there was no probable way to escape his prediciment. The man’s fate was
I picked To Build a Fire because I like adventure stories. It seemed that's the man was a newcomer to Yukon territory in Canada, and he didn't expect this severe frost. So he wasn't prepared for the terrible drop in colds, which was more than 75 degrees below zero, and also had no experience in the country climate. At last, he succeeded to reached his destination with his dog.
It was a chilly Wednesday morning on January 11th. When I woke up that morning, I would have never expected something so tragic to happen that night. I can remember it like it was yesterday. 9:30pm: I was was watching Roman Atwood's vlog called “We are in trouble” and the video was just ending and I was about to turn on the shower. That's when I heard loud bangs from my brothers room. I thought my brother and my dad were fighting so I was about to walk out of my door into hallway when my brother come running through our jack n jill bathroom. He comes running into my room and into the hallway naked. Yes I was very shocked also, I looked at his hand and saw little pieces of skin hanging from it and then saw that his stomach, chest and right are was also burnt. He ran to our guest room and grabbed the fire extinguisher but sadly that was old and wouldn't work. 9:40pm: I went to the balcony that overlooks the family room and I yelled “TRENT'S ROOM IS ON FIRE” five times. I ran back to get my brother and grab a pair of basketball shorts for him.
