Courageous The time I was courageous was when I told my parents and relatives that I wanted to be an automotive engineer. They haven’t seen any girl that’s an automotive engineer and in my culture jobs that relates to a car is a manly job and being an automotive engineer takes a lot of hard work and focus so it took me a lot of courage to convince them. First, they didn’t agree with my decision and gave me lots of reason why I shouldn’t go on engineering field. Every Nepali girl my parents knew were either a doctor, a nurse, or did a job that suits a woman. I told them that just because they haven’t seen any girl who is an automotive engineer doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be one. Everyone else is being either a doctor, a nurse, or doing a job that suits a woman but I want to do something …show more content…
I want to do something I love, something new. When my parents told their friends about my decision on my career they said, “it’s a manly job.” and I should pick a different career but I want to show them that a woman can do manly jobs too. It took me a lot of courage to convince everyone about my decision. My parents support me but there are still many people who think that I won’t be able to be one and that I’ll change my mind soon. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jeremy Atticus Finch, Jr., who goes by Jem. We see Jem attempting to be brave in the very first chapter. Dil says that Jem is too scared to put his toe in the Radley’s front yard. Eventually, Dill bets Jem that he can’t touch the Radley house. Jem was scared but he overcame that fear. His curiosity to a fault about Boo Radley and his bravery takes the form of running up to the Radley house, touching the side, and running back to where Dill and Scout are waiting. Scout helps us understand: 'In all his life, Jem had never
Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death. However, he continued to persevere through it all, and was able to accomplish great things for his country. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, who promoted the education of girls in her country. Despite the clear threat of the Taliban, she continued to fight hard for her cause. Courage can be defined in many different ways, such as the ability to persevere and accomplish something in a frightening or risky situation. Examples of courage can be seen all around the world. Without courageous people, society would not have been able to improve. Being courageous is difficult, and requires an abundance of dedication and perseverance. It also includes remaining strong, despite the challenges that may occur along the way.
Boys often go through a hard journey in their lives, the change of being a boy into a man. They also feel the need to fit society’s view of being a man. In Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, Jem Finch learns the difference between a man and a boy. Jem is the older brother to Scout and often tries to lead her into the right direction. Jem does this by displaying attributes of curiosity, bravery, and stubbornness.
The way that I showed courage in my past was facing what scared me the most. Two of the things that scared me the most was watching my mom get abused and worrying about food. As a kid we were forced to watch my mother get abused by her boyfriends. The only time my sister, brother and I got food was when we would go and beg for food from our neighbors. My mom also taught us how to steal, which was a bad habit I had until I broke it at 12 years old. We all developed habits, my sister hoarded food, my brother hurt himself, and I stole stuff. When I moved in with my Aunt, I was 8 years old and it was the happiest day of my life. However, I was still not getting a lot of food because my sister would eat her food then eat all of mine. This happened until my sister turned 18 and my Aunt found out and kicked her out because she was abuse me. I found the courage to stand up and tell my Aunt so the abuse would end. My life started out rough, but at least it taught me what not to do in life and what to try and avoid. I have shown courage by facing my fears and getting rid of my old habits from my childhood.
Jem is afraid of speaking up and being ridiculed because of his naivete, he even went as far as to restrict his sister, Scout, from helping her father for fear of her speaking up, “Jem shrieked and tried to catch me” (52). Jem tries to stop Scout from helping their father get out of a dangerous situation because of his fear. Jem is afraid of his father’s disapproval because he looks to his father as a rolemodel and he doesn’t want to disappoint Atticus. When Jem is from the Radley house he loses his pants on the fence surrounding the property. Scout is talking to him about going to get them, when she proposes that they should tell Atticus but Jem instantly refuses to carry out the idea because “Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way” (Lee 56). Jem doesn’t want to disappoint Atticus because he is afraid that Atticus would treat him differently. Atticus treats his kids like adults and Jem doesn’t want Atticus to think less of him and treat him like someone that has a lesser intelligence. Jem and Atticus have a relationship that is more professional than casual and it makes Jem think about things and have a more respectful view of not only his family but also the world. “I wanna keep it that way” the author emphasizes the respect Jem has for Atticus by showing that Jem is ashamed of what he did and that he doesn’t want to disappoint Atticus by
Hello, my name is Villette Jones and I am here to give my thoughts, definition, and analysis on Sacrifice. Sacrifice has many different meaning and even more synonyms to go along with it, a few words or phrases that catch my immediate attention when thinking of Sacrifice are ( Cede, Immolate, Endure, and Part With ). However when I asked associates and my peers majority of them thought of Forfeit. When I take time to really think, in my own opinion Sacrifice is Forfeit, Suffering, and Offering. These are very significant second hand words to my original word (Sacrifice), and as you read along I will show you exactly what I mean by it.
Therefore his understanding of courage changes as he gets older. In the beginning Jem’s idea of courage is very materialistic, such as touching the side of the Radley house — and then only because ‘In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare’ (page 14). However he learns from people like Atticus and Mrs Dubose what real courage. An example of Jem displaying courage is when he faced the mob outside Maycomb County jail, on the night that Tom Robinson was returned to Maycomb County Jail. He did this because he feared for the safety of his father. A quote from this scene is 'I ain't going,' (page 168). This quote tells the reader that even though Atticus told Jem to go home he didn’t and Jem would always stand by his father and would show much courage and risk his own life to save his father. Hence this portrays that Jem is a character that shows courage in the novel.
But I think its take guts and courage to stick your belief even when it is making all sort of problems for you. Killing a man isn't always an act of bravery. Going out into a fire or just a very dangerous situation to help someone is an act of bravery. I think it suppose to be a requirement with firefighters at least. But doing that even though you are scared, is a courageous thing as well. After all running into a burning when your first instinct should be to run for your life takes a great deal of courage. I imagine the amount of courage is takes to run into battle when people are shooting at you and risking your life at the same is quite a large amount. I think some people get the definition of cowardice wrong. If being a coward was
In the summer of 1933, Jem Finch was 9 years old. As most older brothers, Jem was prideful and a bit of a showoff. This became most evident when Dill dared him to touch the Radley’s house. Jem, not wanting to back down from a dare initiated by someone whom he was older than, did exactly what he was dared to do, trying his hardest to keep his head up and his fear not show through. Jem, being
Sacrifice is the story of sacrifice of Isaac by the father Abraham; when god ordered Abraham to sacrifice Isaac and he was ready to do so when an angel came down and held the hand of Abraham and did not let him sacrifice Isaac. Jews belief that it was the test of Abraham and it was his time to proof his superior love towards god and that test he passed but god did not let him sacrifice Isaac. Seculars ask many questions on this story though; what kind of god is that who ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son, what was going through the mind of the Abraham and what must have been going through the mind of the other people. Jews say that god is great and merciful, but seculars ask that how a merciful god can order such a thing. According to the
Sacrifice. We've all sacrificed something for someone. Some of us sacrificed a little, some have sacrificed a lot, and others have sacrificed all.
The greatest aspect of my present life in which the qualities of character, courage, and conviction are the most present in is in my extracurricular activities. Courage is what allowed me to today be captain of the FRC Robotics Team at my school. I walked in into my first interest meeting for the team in 2013 and was discouraged when I saw I was only one of three girls in the whole room. At that moments my eagerness to join the team diminished, I was worried about how the boys in the team would treat me. After seeing that the lead mentor for the program was a woman, I realized I had to at least try. It took a lot of courage for me to come back to the meetings but I did, I knew I was going against the popular option, but I did not mind. I was welcomed along with the other two girls.
In my life I need a lot of courage to do the things I do every day, It takes a lot of courage to just come to school every Monday and take that test I know I am not ready for yet. Although I may need a lot of courage every day, one example really pops in my mind when I think of courage in my life. My dad, My brother and myself were all traveling to Utah for a snowboarding trip, and up there in Utah, it is a lot different than it is in Vermont or upstate New York which is where I normally go. I have been snowboarding for many years and I have gotten a lot better than I used to be, but when my dad and said we were going to the highest point of the mountain, to go down double black diamonds, I got so much more nervous than I was before. Where
Over the course of the novel Jem is maturing through events that happen such as when “I drew bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away, ‘Scouts a coward!’ ringing in my ears. It was the first time I had walked away from a fight.” (Lee 76-77). Another time he said “Atticus, ‘he said, why don’t people like us and Miss Maudie ever sit on juries? You never see anyone from
The author reveals Jem’s first impression of bravery using actions. At the beginning, Lee says, “Jem through open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see I his foray was successful.” (Lee 18). From his actions, the readers can understand that at a young age, Jem thought that bravery was doing an outrageous act. As a young child, that may seem brave to go run up and touch the Radley house, but others of the congregation see it as disrespectful and childish. This supports the idea of changing bravery because Jem’s fellow peers, Scout and Dill, thought that he was outgoing and brave because he did something that they were scared to do. In coming chapters, Lee writes, “Jem became vaguely articulate: ‘d you see him Scout? ‘d you see him just standin’ there?... ‘n’ all of a sudden he just relaxed all over, an’ it looked like that gun was part of him… an’ he did it so quick, like… I hafta aim for ten minutes ‘fore I can hit somethin’…” (Lee 129). This quote shows that Atticus’ actions make a huge impact on what Jem thinks
Admittedly, I never knew what courage meant until I stood in front of hundreds of people in an auditorium. I was a grain of sand and they were the sea, coming to consume every part of me. Now I quaked like the small children I laughed at and my mother wasn’t at my side. There was no place to hide, I was completely exposed to the sea of people. I don’t know what it was, but all of a sudden the spotlight dimmed a little. The sea of people became a lazy river, and I could
