Hughes uses Luella’s and Roger’s characteristics to enrich the theme of kindness and forgiveness. Luella portrays a caring, humble, and trusting figure towards Roger. Her traits can be seen in the story when she says,”You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong.” Furthermore, Luella's caring nature towards Roger changes his outlook on life. Luella’s humbleness also contributes to the theme. When she says,” The least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?” Furthermore, this quote displays Luella's humbleness because even if Roger tried to steal from her, she still offers her hospitality towards him. Luella trusting personality plays a role in enhancing the themes meaning as well. When Hughes says,” The woman …show more content…
In the beginning of the story, Roger displays a mischievous characteristic. This trait is displayed when Hughes says, “When a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her.” Furthermore, this example depicts Roger’s mischievous behavior and how he had no morals in life. Roger’s a dynamic character and his changes are seen in the middle of the story .Roger is disregarded at home but becomes astonished with Luella’s caring nature towards him. This is revealed when Roger says,” You going to take me to jail?” This quote exhibits Roger’s astonishment because Luella could have turned him in for trying to steal but she did not. Roger is usually disregarded by people, but Luella was caring towards him and trusted him, which filled him with gratefulness. Roger’s gratitude towards Luella is revealed in the end of the story when Hughes says,”The boy wanted to say something else other than “thank you ma'am “to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones…” This quote is a fantastic example that conveys Luella’s kindness and how it affected Roger so abundantly that he becomes overwhelmed with gratitude and is speechless. The theme of the story cannot manifest itself without Luella’s and Roger’s brilliant and impactful
Ms. Luella is strong and has the attitude of someone that doesn't accept non-sense. She means every word she says. She forced Roger to her house to show that she isn't kidding. She said "I would teach you from right to wrong" in page 1, paragraph 16, line 1. She taught him by

In the chapter of “Dis-Grace,” Boyle uses the story of Lula to show how giving people attention goes a long way, and he shows it very well with the story Lula. In the book, Boyle had a young boy named Lula that was very skinny and looked like he was from a “third world”. In this story for the chapter “Dis-Grace” Lula was never appreciated by anyone and only wanted attention from other people Boyle gave him this. Lula wasn’t the smartest, he had a disability and was in special Ed he couldn’t even remember his own birthday. He loved coming to Boyles office because of the attention he got there he would always make a “beeline” for Boyles office every time he had arrived.
On August 9, 2014,a young man by the name of Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer. It is little known why the shooting occurred, but the boy was unarmed. This could be one of many cases of modern day racism and segregation. In 1930, “even after the abolishment of slavery in 1865, blacks were still almost powerless(BBC 2)”.Blacks were heavily segregated and had almost no rights. Many cases of segregation in the 1930s caused a lot of current day racial tension in the united states.
The woman, Mrs. Jones, does not let this happen, and as the story continues, gives Roger an opportunity to think about his decisions, and to make better, more honorable ones. Mrs. Jones does this by leaving the purse Roger tried to steal in plain sight, leaving her front door open for Roger to take the purse and run. Roger does not do that. Instead he waits for the meal she is preparing for him, and cleans himself up. In “Charles”, Laurie, in his journey of learning to be truthful, starts out by inventing an imaginary troublemaker named Charles.
I think her kindness changed because it showed him that stealing can get you beat up, and also put in the dirt. So I think he changed because he knows that if he want something just ask for it. Another reason is that I think he might go back to stealing again because he only tried it once. Also he could try to steal from her again a year later. So Roger won’t change his ways but change the way he steals. On page 32 it quotes that Roger said,’’ there’s nobody home at my ‘’house. So I think that’s why he steals on page 31 the boy said,” I didn’t aim
One trait that Lucy shares with Rose is her intelligence and yearn to learn more. Lucy satisfies her hunger by studying and working abroad. In her letters, Rose writes “Mrs Elliot says I am thirsty for words and she gave mr books. I read the poem again and again.(193)” This shows that even to Mrs. Elliot who Rose had just met, her need to learn was apparent.
People can change bad decisions you made in the past. In the book, thank you m’am , Roger does something wrong and Luella Bates Washington Jones comes in and changes him completely. Mrs. Jones can tell that on the inside, he is a good person. Roger and Mrs. Jones interactions in the story and the conflicts that Roger goes through impels the changes in his character.
His desire to steal the purse was driven by the strong want to buy blue suede shoes. This desire of the shoes can be compared to Macbeth’s desire of the throne. Both characters did evil deeds to reach their ultimate goal. Roger, however, is unable to successfully steal the purse and learns an important lesson through his failure. After Roger’s failed attempt, the story explains the woman’s initial actions, “... she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled” (Hughes, 1). This quote shows her aggressive behavior that masked her knowledgeable and caring personality. Roger is made to go back to her house to clean up and have a meal. The theme of patience is learned during his visit to her house, “The woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind her on the day-bed. But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye” (Hughes, 3). This quote expresses the amount of respect and trust built by both Roger and the woman in this short amount of time. She later explains to him that she understands his motive to steal as she has done wrongful deeds as well. She finished her talk with him by saying, “And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto
Luella Bates Washington Jones had done it was time for Roger to leave. And Roger’s last words to her were “Thank you ma’am” (page 7 lines 67) This shows how he was being selfless not selfish, The whole quote is key to the phrase. But the words that help support my claim is “thank you”. This shows his appreciation for what Mrs. Luella had done for him. Earlier before that he feels overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion in Mrs. Luella Bate Washington Jones’s heart. After all the trouble he had put her through she still tried his best to help him. Which helped him to understand that even when you are faced with people who are giving you grief you need to still be kind to
Initially, LuLing rebels Precious Auntie due to her alteration of the marriage proposal from a rich family. LuLing wants to be a woman and the proposal changes LuLing for the worse because she selfishly chooses to leave Precious Auntie for a family that causes her pain. Secondly, Ruth resists LuLing for not being given privacy and liberty. Ruth had not been given the chance to live freely, she was constantly being under surveillance from her mother and which makes her feel like a bird trapped in a cage. Lastly, LuLing and Ruth overlook the past and look forward for what the future awaits for them unlike how LuLing and Precious Auntie where their relationship goes awry. Both LuLing and Ruth forgive each other for their mistakes years ago, however the death of Precious Auntie, LuLing cannot forgive herself for the pain she causes Precious Auntie. The similarities between the defiance against their mother not only showcase the desires of each individual, but how their fights have contrasting repercussions of the mothers
Luella Bates Washington Jones are also drastically different in both their personality and their appearance. Luella was a large woman whereas the washwoman was old, small, and frail. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones moreover was stern. She did what she pleased, even if it was out of the ordinary. For instance, after Roger attempted to rob her, Luella took Roger back to her home to teach him a lesson about stealing. Normally someone would bring Roger straight to the police, but Luella was stubborn and did everything her way. On the contrary, the washwoman was humble. She did everything she could to not be a burden to anyone else. “The old woman did not want to become a burden, and so she bore her burden.” Luella was also understanding. Like Roger, she knew what it felt like to want something you couldn’t have and so Luella understood why Roger tried to steal from her. “I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.” In contrast to Luella, the washwoman was a perfectionist. She needed everything to be in perfect order. When she did the laundry, it was always folded methodically with every piece neatly ironed. “Every piece of linen sparkled like polished silver. Every piece was neatly ironed.” Furthermore, Luella was forgiving and generous. She forgave Roger for trying to steal from her. Luella even provided a meal to Roger and gave him money for the shoes he wanted. Dissimilar to Luella, the washwoman was
Jones. One reason Roger is thankful is because Mrs. Jones didn't turn him into the police. Roger questioned "‘You gonna take me to jail?" asked the boy bending over the sink. "‘ not with that face, i would not take you nowhere"' illustrated his thankfulness (Hughes 122). Roger is thankful to Mrs. Jones because she didn't turn him in to the police after the attempted robbery he would have been charged with. Also he gets to go home instead of having to go to jail for a certain amount of time because his family can't get him out. Furthermore, another reason Roger is thankful is for everything Mrs. Jones has done for him. Rogers thought " The boy wanted to say something else other than "‘ Thank you M'am "‘ to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but he couldn't do so as he turned at the barren stoop and looked at the large in the door." Shows his thankfulness ( Hughes 124) Roger wishes he could've said something else but thank you. Also he is thankful for the gifts of acceptance and a new view of the world. In conclusion, Roger is thankful because Mrs. Jones didn't turn him in and for everything she's done for
From Lula’s viewpoint her tone of the story would be range and anger due to the fact that she wasn’t getting her way, which wasn’t normal for her and I can infer this matter based on her actions involving Clay. Clay’s viewpoint
Roger thinks to himself while leaving the doctor's office. "What will I do now?" Roger continues, "I have everything I want in life, a family, a healthy career, and a purpose." He suddenly remembers that he needs to thank Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones for everything she has done for him. She changed his life forever.
