The world is usually a black or white place. You are either rich or poor, black or white, good looking or just so-so. But what about the grey area? The grey area in which no one chooses to go. This is the area of seeing the world from a different perspective. This is where you can see it from another person’s perspective. Even if people do not like going to this area, it is still important so that we can understand how other people see this world. Walk a mile in their shoes and see how you feel about it then, they say. This is completely true. As Atticus says to Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This would be climbing into the
To Kill a Mockingbird was a very influential book in the eyes of a growing young woman in America in the 1930’s from the eyes of Jean Louise as a child and Jean reminiscing or reflecting as an adult about the past. Mayella Ewell was a white woman who was looked down upon by her own race and the African Americans were too scared to talk to her. Mayella was looked at to be powerless over her own life and others. If she is, then why does she win the case against Tom Robinson? In the town of Maycomb race, class, and gender played larger roles than some may think let's determine how.
All humans are born innocent. Innocence is a time when a person has never done something, it is the first step of a human beings existence. The second step is experience. This step happens after a person has done something he or she has never done before or learns something he or she has never know before. The motif of innocence and experience occurs many times in Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”. The process of this growth is especially obvious in Jem and Scout’s journey through out the book.
On March 4, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt stated in his first inauguration speech, “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance," (Baughman). This quote translates to a confusing concept at first, but once discussed is practical: the fear of an individual should not be the concern, yet it should be the damage fear itself has on one. Little did we know at the time that this quote, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” would turn into “the very symbol” of Roosevelt’s Presidency (Baughman).
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character responded differently to their loss of innocence.
A werewolf in folklore and mythology is a person who shape shifts into a wolf, either purposely, by using magic or by being placed under a curse. Werewolves were known in almost all European countries and cultures. Werewolves are only second in line to vampires in popularity.
Charles Lamb once wrote, “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once,” which also happens to be the epigraph of Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. This quote demonstrates the connection between lawyers, who are usually seen as serious and understanding, and children, who are usually seen as carefree and innocent. The “lawyer” in this quote refers to anyone who is understanding, empathetic and informed, rather than just the profession, whilst the “children” refer to anyone who has yet to grasp a better understanding about the complexity of people and their lives. This quote depicts how children went through some tough times and faced difficult dilemmas which caused them to eventually, become lawyers and to who

Dysfunction can be defined as not operating normally or properly. Evident throughout history, societies affected by segregation have become dysfunctional. During the time of the Holocaust, the Jews were segregated from the rest of society. They had no rights, were enslaved, and murdered. Dysfunction spread through Germany, they lost WWII, and suffered from a great amount of debt. Within To Kill a Mockingbird and Pleasantville segregation creates a dysfunctional society by degrading and limiting the rights of a section of its population, as well as leaving the society vulnerable.
Raising children in the era of Jim Crow laws provided a unique teaching experience for Atticus to provide to Scout and Jem. These laws followed the Southern societal ideas of the separation between races, but also demonstrated a division between a community where individuals held different moral ideas. To Kill a Mockingbird explores human morality from the perception of a six year old child, providing a different perspective on important issues of this time period. Scout’s understanding of morality develops from her once simple idea of an individual being either good or evil to a much more complete comprehension of its complexity. In retrospect, Scout as the narrator revels in her naivety and child-like innocence throughout her
“Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee pg. 90). The bird, mentioned nearly twice, seems to show little importance to the story. Nonetheless, it resembles the perception of some characters. The one time Scout had ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do anything was when referring to the mockingbird. He advised his children when hunting to never shoot a mockingbird. Miss Maudie followed with further detail by explaining that “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee pg.90).
Have you ever have been judged by anyone? Did you ever judge anyone, according to how they look or act? Quotes such as “Every single person on the planet has a story. Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth may surprise you” and “Don’t judge a book by its cover” were established long ago, as a result of lessons learned. The comments you make before knowing someone, can contradict the person’s personality. Therefore, it’s impolite to evaluate someone before knowing them. Such quotes not only relate to our everyday life now, but they are also related to a novel written in the 1960s. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Scout lives with her father Atticus, her brother Jem, and their cook Calpurnia in the old Alabama town of Maycomb. This book takes the readers to the
A Jury plays a necessary part in the criminal justice system in England and Wales. Trial by jury is one of the ways that could be useful for reaching justice in the courts. The jury has 12 citizens who are chosen randomly from different genders and different ages. (The Guardian, 2005) the jurors work is to help the judge to a make decision about the case so the lawyers show them the evidence and anything related to the case and then the jurors will try to make the right judgment whether the criminal is guilty or not.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. Discuss this quote from Atticus in relation to 3 characters from the novel.
Unfortunately there is not only bullying in schools, there is bullying in the workplace as well. These are unacceptable behaviors that arise within a workplace situation. Bullying the workplace can take many forms and it’s not easy to always identify. The Fair Work Act 2009 made recent amendments that came into effect in January 2014 to define workplace bullying as occurring when an individual; group of individuals; repeatedly behaves unreasonably towards the worker, group of workers of which the worker is a member; and the behavior creates a risk to health and safety (Le Mire & Owens, 2014). This definition focuses on three main elements of bullying behavior, it is repeated, unreasonable, and creates a risk to health and safety. All three elements must be satisfied in order for bullying at the workplace to be found. Bullying behaviors could be things that are victimizing, humiliating, intimidating or threatening, but it is not limited to just those behaviors.
