I think that To Kill A Mockingbird reflects historical realities in three ways. In the book, Atticus Finch said, “professional people were poor because the farmers were poor” (Lee, pg 23). This is a reflection of the way that the Great Depression and Dust Bowl hit Southern farms hard and made life difficult. During this time farmers could barely grow enough to eat, let alone sell at market and support their families. Another example of this reason is when, Scout is spoken to by her teacher. "'Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.' I mumbled that I was sorry and retired meditating upon my crime" (Lee, pg 19). In this discussion you can see that when it came to women and education, Maycomb, Alabama was just like any
A tomboy. A “negro”. An outsider. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Maycomb is filled with prejudice and stereotypes. Much like today, people believe there is a certain way things are meant to be. Prejudice and stereotypes have only evolved throughout the past 90 years.
Historical Context- The major historical context of To Kill a Mockingbird is the Great Depression and Civil Rights in the 1950’s. Although the end of slavery was almost a century before the book was published (1950), African Americans were still being denied many of their basic rights. Although Lee’s novel takes place in the South during the 1930s, conditions had not changed much by the early 1960s in America. The Civil Rights movement was just taking shape in the 1950s, and its principles were beginning to find a voice in American courtrooms and the law. Relating to To Kill a Mockingbird, the justice system was very discriminatory in the 1950s because blacks were

Historically, women have spent time living in the shadows of men, purely because of their gender. Women are oppressed and expected to conform to certain gender roles/expectations because of their sex, just like men. Caitlyn Jenner is a transgender female. Her name was Bruce Jenner however she felt trapped in a male’s body when deep in side she knew that she was a female. Caitlyn Jenner did not fit well into the stereotypical description of a male. Harper Lee wrote To Kill A Mockingbird around the 1950s. Men and women had their separate unique roles where they were expected to look and act according to their gender. Caitlyn Jenner is one of the few individuals who are not afraid to express themselves. However if Caitlyn Jenner tried to do that during the 1950s, she would have certainly been eliminated from the world. In To Kill A Mocking- bird, Harper Lee expresses the issue of strict rules by using the symbol of the prison.

Throughout the novel, examples would be between the Negroes and Whites, Scout and school kids, and between Atticus and the whole White society.
To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the 1930’s, a time of intense racial inequity and prejudice. Harper Lee intends for the novel to display the harsh reality to the real world, and exhibit how life and society were really like during this period in history. Humanity’s views and morals have shown little sign of ever being able to accept change or difference as seen in particular issues such as racism, discrimination, sexism, prejudice etc. Whilst reading the novel, readers can identify these well-known problems and maybe even relate to some of the ideas that Lee is portraying. Lee uses symbols to effectively communicate and express her thoughts and opinions on the various themes of the book. Moreover, these symbols are able to tap into the subconscious mind to implement ideas that can be analyzed in order to understand their relevance to not only the plot line and major theme topics of the novel: appearance versus reality, conscience and integrity, and loss of innocence, but also to modern society.

Scott also learns the difference between rumors and facts when it comes to Boo Radley. There were two themes that were very important throughout the story, one theme is “never to kill a mockingbird”. The second themes is “to keep fighting even if you know you’ll lose”.
