A white woman accused Tom Robinson with rape and harassment. Now that the trial is over and we know that it is not true, he was sentenced to prison. Tom eventually tried to escape. Tom was shot seventeen times. I can see how Tom would try to escape for something he did not do. To be shot seventeen times you will die. Tom Robinson died having to deal with racism his whole life. Tom was a great man. Tom would help out around with the Ewells without even earning a penny. Saying that they were going through the Great Depression, I would say he is very loyal. For this to happen to him was tragic. Now Boo Radley had been prisoned in side the basement. When he was younger he stabbed his father with a scissors. Ever since then everyone had been scared
"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird." This is a quote by Miss Maudie, a character in To Kill a Mockingbird. In this quote, the author Harper Lee explains that mockingbirds are innocent, as they do nothing to conflict with others. Because of this, these birds shouldn’t be shot. However, they still are by those with abusive power. In this analogy, the mockingbirds represent the innocent people in society that are often victimized due to an injustice use of power. To prevent limitless power between the government and the citizens, America has put checks

Humans have lived on earth for millions of years, and have learned how to live together. Despite this, they are far from perfect. Throughout history, humans have made plenty of mistakes, and continue to do so. They have been unnecessarily cruel towards each other for reasons such as skin color or gender. This is greatly displayed in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, in which harsh judgment and racism both play major roles. Throughout the novel, unnecessary cruelty affects the victims and perpetrators, and how humans can still learn and grow in their effort to be kind.
Discrimination, it has been part of human nature for a long time, especially relevant subject in literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the main character of Scout Finch was exposed to different types of discrimination as she grows up. Discrimination affected the lives of characters in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird because of society’s prejudicial views of race, gender, and class.
How would you like it if you were not treated the same way as other people because of the color of your skin, knowledge or your way of life? In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird people are treated unfairly all because of the color of their skin, culture and their unique life style.
People judge others all the time. Just because someone does not get paid as much means they do not try hard enough, and someone who has a different skin color is automatically a bad person. These thoughts are called prejudice. People have thoughts like these everyday, every hour, every minute, every second, this does not mean it is right. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the people of Maycomb have these thoughts against people like Tom Robinson or Walter Cunningham. But there are some strong characters that go against all the discrimination against these people.Harper lee conveys that a person's income or race does not make them less of a person through the words, thoughts, and actions of Calpurnia, Dill, and Atticus.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout learns that she must see past prejudices to address others as individuals because her prejudices hold the power to harm others. Initially, Scout’s perception of prejudices are static and unconcerned, but when she comprehends the malevolence of Maycomb’s racism and prejudice against the Ewells. When she looks past her negative prejudices against her father and her aunt, Scout learns that social expectations create prejudice. Lastly, she addresses the negative effects that prejudices inflict upon Mayella and Arthur Radley, and learns that prejudices cause injustices. Lee clearly illustrates that when one fails to look past prejudices, they harm others. This is still relevant today, and is seen in
Social injustice is a huge issue that is depicted in Harper Lee’s novel. Social injustice is seen throughout the world. Where racism and social inequality exist social injustice prevails. Social injustice has a role in society to give an excuse to treat people rudely and poorly. The effects that social injustice has is violence.
Atticus once stated, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). This made his daughter Scout realize that people were being discriminated against in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel is narrated by a young girl named Scout and follows her as she learns of the racism in her old, sleepy Alabama town. This sparks up when she is viewing a trial about a black man raping a white women during the depression era and the whole town turns on that man. On Christmas, the kids got BB guns and Atticus told them, “Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 119).
Discrimination in the school environment was a controversial issue in the 1960’s. Over this specific time period, the view of Black citizens in school was extremely different compared to that of the White citizens. The school institution, which being founded for an educational purpose, had prime examples of how there was a separation between the schools of Black’s and White’s. The differing views between Blacks and Whites in schools was a reoccurring theme through the 1960s and in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there are apparent signs of White school systems still having a more segregated view on discrimination.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a fictional novel, taking place in the early 1900’s during the years of the Great Depression. This is also set in the deep south in Maycomb, Alabama. The characters in this novel struggle with stereotypes, racism, and judging people. The trial of injustice and falsely accusing becomes the major conflict. The question arises of why is stereotyping a dilemma for Bob Ewell?
Appearance is everything especially when you meet someone for the first time. Throughout history, a person’s skin color has either caused unity or division. Sadly, it is something that most people judge you on. Many people in our history and in present day society are very prejudice, meaning they discriminate against you solely based on a certain quality-such as the color of your skin. This is a form of racism because they believe that a person’s hue defines their value, causing them to believe so low in people with darker skin and so highly in people who are white. Not only are people prejudice on race but in gender as well. In this world, there has been a conflict in what women should do and what they shouldn’t do. This sense of prejudice is shown in the novel written by Harper Lee called, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. In this novel the main character’s father, Atticus, is a lawyer who deals with a case where he has to defend a black man, Thomas Robinson, who is being falsely accused by Bob Ewell for raping and physically abusing his daughter Mayella Violet Ewell. Atticus faces a lot of difficulties protecting this innocent white man because of the amount of discrimination going on in the 1930’s in Maycomb, Alabama. As well as this racism occurring in the novel, gender inequality is also shown in the way Scout’s actions are frowned upon by her family members because it isn’t what women should be doing according to them. In the Harper Lee’s novel there are many examples of
For living in such a racial unequal town during the Great Depression, Atticus Finch shows a lot of justice throughout To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus Finch believes in standing up for what he believes is right.
Discrimination is prevalent in the story “To Kill a Mockingbird”, the most obvious being the excessive amount of racism (Lee). Racism is the easiest to see but there are more forms of discrimination (Lee). Boo Radley is ostracized from the community when truly nobody really knows him (Lee). People discriminate Scout for being a tomboy not a lady (Lee). The last one that no one ever thinks about is how reverse racism is seen when people threaten Atticus for defending Tom Robinson in court (Lee). Discrimination in any form is a controversial topic but everyone knows that it is not right to discriminate against people.
Our minds are the single most powerful tool in the body. Thought enables us to function, to decide, and to reason. Equally so, an idea is a powerful thing. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee presents us with a story of a town who let its preconceived ideas get in the way of logic, sense, and proof. The prevailing idea that causes so much turmoil in Maycomb is that people who are different are wrong, and should be stopped. This notion permeates the actions of the town, causing them to disregard all rational thought, hold illogical personal opinions as fact, and act unfairly towards others. The theme of injustice appears numerous times in the book through the assumptions made against Boo, Scout’s experience at school, and the unfair conviction of Tom Robinson.
