There are many times in one’s life when one conceals the truth. It can be brought on by fear of another’s reaction or even shame from society. Throughout the book we see fear, unfairness, and discrimination. Harper Lee shows that discrimination is caused by the fear of people who are different.
Maycomb, Alabama, a small town where everyone knows each other, is a segregated community. The black people don’t have very nice jobs and many of times work for the white people like the characters Calpurnia and Tom Robison. People of different ethnicity can, but sometimes won’t let black people work the same way they do. Mr.Link Deas is one who is against segregation, ” I just want the whole lot to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’ trouble outa him”(261). This quote is showing that some of the people with a different race see the discrimination and do not like it.
Atticus wanted to show his kids that discrimination is hurtful to other people. “...Maycomb’s usual disease...Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I just don’t understand.”(pg. 117) The quote is showing that Lee was trying to …show more content…

Lee uses the character of Boo Radley to symbolize “the misunderstood or different” lifestyle. “Any stealthy small crimes committed in Maycomb were his work” (10). This quote shows that because everyone will eventually find out about what has happened, many people think Boo Radley is the culprit. “...people still look at the Radley Place unwilling to discard their initial suspicions.”(10) People make assumptions about Boo Radley’s life because he is always in his house and may look to some people peculiar. There have been many untold mysteries of Boo Radley. He was a character that Jem, Scout, and many other people didn’t know him personally, but their assumptions kept them from getting to know
