To Legalize Cannabis or Not Everyone has an opinion on the reoccurring subject of cannabis legalization. Some people are against cannabis just because it is against the law. While others believe cannabis usage goes along with free will and that the government has no right to interfere. Some say marijuana is a gateway drug, leading to the use of more serious drugs. Still, a percentage of the population believes hemp is okay and legal growing in the U.S. could benefit our economy, with an abundance of uses that would be a better choice for the environment and our health, than other options we currently seek. In response the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched its “Hemp for Victory” program, encouraging farmers to plant hemp by giving out seeds and granting draft deferments to those who would stay home and grow hemp. By 1943 American farmers registered in the program harvested 375,000 acres of hemp. (“Marijuana Timeline”) In 1945 the war was over and by the 1950’s stricter laws were put into effect mandating jail time for every drug offense including marijuana (“Marijuana Timeline”). Another fact that is unknown to many people is that there are different types of cannabis plants. Each is grown for a different use. Julian Gairdner notes, “Three different types of hemp exist: the illegal one high TCH (marijuana), the conventional long-stemmed ‘fibre’ varieties, and varieties grown principally for their seed, such as Finola bred in Finland and now being multiplied on 275ha in the UK on seed contracts with Springdale (“Heaps Of Hemp Potential”). All three types of hemp are low maintenance, with no weeding and very little water needed. A small field of hemp comes with the possibility of high yield. Every part of the hemp plant can be used.
