Tom Robinson finally testifies and I believe what he says. The only reason why he is even in that court is because his skin color. First off, Tom Robinson has always passed by the Ewell’s place and Mayella always asks him to do some work for her. Tom Robinson was just trying to be a gentlemen. Secondly, Tom Robinson has a family. I am sure any gentleman like him would not do that to his own wife or kids. Besides having a family, the man is crippled!! There is almost no way he abused Mayella as described by Bob and Heck. The only reason why he is guilty is because he is a Negro, and everyone assumes Negroes always do bad. The facts are plain and simple. Mayella tempted Tom and Bob being the abusive person he is, abused Mayella for what she had
“Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird...mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. “ In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the title itself is symbolic. Atticus Finche tells his children that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent, navie, and mind their own busniess to all, which is why it is a sin to kill them for no reason. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the mockingbird is symobloized in four specific characters in the novel representing innocence of being a mockingbird.
The reason the author did introduce the town of Maycomb was to explain how it was. The town Maycomb was little it was on the southern side. It was not that rich. People were racist and they were in the great depression time. It was a small town in Southern Alabama there was no money to spend and buy stuff. Change had not came to Maycomb yet. There were still early survivors of the Civil War. They would tell the people about the good times. Scout did spend all of her youth time in Maycomb. The Great Depression was raging up. Black and White were still separated. The trial of Tom Robinson was a big event for the people of Maycomb. Maycomb County was recently told that they had nothing to be feared for but fear itself. The town people were so
Tom Robinson is not guilty because throughout chapters 18 and 19 there were clear evidence on why he couldn’t have assaulted her. Where in chapter 19 “As he raised his right hand, the useless one slipped off the Bible and hit the clerk’s table” (190,19). This is a clear evidence because Mayella got hit on the right side of her face, though if Tom were to attack here he would’ve only managed to injure her left; since he can only use his right arm. Also how in the same chapter Tom says “She hugged me… kissed me ‘side of th’ face” (194,19). She didn’t get attacked by him, on the concur it was him to be attacked. Though later it’s brought to conclusion how maybe her father attacked her, since his side of the story is how he saw them through a
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson was too gullible and nice because he put trust in Mayella Ewell without knowing her true character first. Class, race, and gender all take a large account into this as well since Mayella is an uneducated, white, female living in Maycomb Alabama during the early 1930s and Tom is a black, married male who also lives in Maycomb Alabama during the 1930s. Mayella asked Tom to come inside her house to help her move boxes, and since Tom was a gentleman he agreed. When he went inside the Ewell's house, Mayella tried to kiss Tom, leaving Tom telling the true story of what happened between himself and Mayella at the witness stand. Tom stated, “She says she never kissed a grown man before… She says what
He accused a black man of something he knew that man did not do, for the only reason being that Tom Robinson was black, and maybe Bob would get away with everything he did. Before the case was held, he had to have told Mayella to blame Tom instead of telling the truth, to spare Bob, and blame the black man. This reason also shows how much things have changed over years. Back then accusing the black was not as that frowned upon, but now it is a big deal. In the end Tom ended up dead. Do you think Bob still would have blamed Tom if he knew it was going to cost that man his
Tom Robinson was accused of rape and convicted after the jury disregarded evidence that proved he was an innocent man. Robinson was a free black man with a wife and kids. Mayella Ewell claimed that Robinson forced his way into her house, raped her, and beat her. It was determined that her injuries were caused by a left handed person, thus proving Robinson’s innocence as his left arm had been crippled in an accident as a young boy. Despite Robinson clearly not being the culprit, his darker pigmented skin led the jury to convict him.
“Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal.” However, for a strange reason, some people do not treat all men equally. Instead, they are prejudiced against certain groups or races. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is very prevalent in the lives of people in the South. Racism has affected the supposedly unbiased jury, as evidenced by the book. Though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty, there are many reasons why the jury should have ruled in favor of Robinson.
Yesterday morning, a trial was held regarding an issue of a black man, Tom Robinson, raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman. The case took place at the Maycomb County Courthouse which was divided into two levels, black folks in the balcony, and whites at the bottom. The case was conducted by Judge Taylor and a hand-picked jury. The defense lawyer was Atticus Finch and Mr. Gilmer was the prosecutor. The case ended by declaring Tom Robinson as guilty after long hours of jury deliberation.
Harper Lee once brilliantly said, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” This quote accurately describes a character in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mr. Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson, although a minute character, brings significant influence in the other character's lives. He brings symbolism, eminent character traits, surprising color representation, and a powerful tie to the plot.
As a result of Mayella and her father being white, there should not be any complications on the jury’s decision. Although this may be true, the jury should have enough knowledge to realize that Tom Robinson is an innocent man. In Mayella’s favor, not convicting an African American being accused of attacking a white woman is unthinkable. Mayella uses these circumstances to the best of her ability
Many people believe that Americans should nullify its racial past. Although that is our past, as Americans we can’t change events that happened in history. In Tom Robinson’s trial it is shown how a little town like Maycomb can be with the town fold and their prejudices. Less than 100 years ago, African Americans were still slaves. The period of time this book was based on was when racism was supposed to be over although it still remains, MANY African Americans were slaves in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson, although a good man, was imprisoned for his skin color.
The question of who is to blame for the death of Tom Robinson has many answers. Many people would say that Mayella is to blame for the death of the Mr. Robinson. Mayella could have told the jury the truth, that she took advantage of Tom Robinson and that her father beat her up. Bob Ewell was the one who deprived Mayella of human interaction and if he wouldn't have done that Mayella wouldn't have the need to take advantage of Mr.Robinson. Mayella is only nineteen and I can see why she would be scared to tell the jury the truth about her abusive father. Bob Ewell would beat Mayella once again for exposing him. “Who beat you up? Tom Robinson or your father?”... “What did your father see in the window, the crime of rape or the best defense to it? Why don’t you tell the
Although a lot of people thought that Tom Robinson was guilty of raping Mayella, there was substantial evidence that shows that he clearly was not guilty of the crime he was accused of. Tom Robinson was accused wrongly of a crime he didn't commit solely because he was a black man. Tom being black in the 1930’s meant that no matter what he said or what evidence proved, he still would be accused of the crime he didn't commit because of his race.
In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is in trial for the supposed rape of Bob Ewell’s daughter, Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson was on his way home when Mayella Ewell asked him to help her with something. Being a kind man, he went into her yard and started to look for some of the plants he usually dug up for her when she asked him for help. He didn’t find any, so he asked her what it was she needed. She told him a box she needed was up in a place she couldn’t reach. He went in the house and grabbed the box, and after he did Mayella told him the door was broken. Tom Robinson proceeded to look at the door, not finding anything wrong with it. He told her and she jumped on him, hugging him and saying she never kissed a black
It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird “shoot all the bluejays you want, but it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This quote is said by Atticus who is a lawyer that defends an innocent black man for being accused of raping a white women. To kill a mockingbird is set in the 1930s in Maycomb alabama where there was prejudices. This story is not just about racism but implies a deeper meaning, the mockingbird has a strong message and holds an important metaphorical meaning. The mockingbird is portrayed as a innocent fragile songbird that symbolizes innocence but is killed by men. Tom Robinson symbolizes an innocent fragile songbird because he does no harm to society, his voice is ignored by almost everyone, and he gets shot and killed just like an innocent fragile songbird.
