Addressing tobacco use the public health problem Describing the public health problem
In the United States, the use of tobacco is increasing from time to time. There are significant risks associated with tobacco use. According to the CDC (2017) website, “Smoking causes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, stroke cancer, heart disease, lung diseases, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis” (CDC, 2017). Phillips et al. (2017) included in their morbidity and mortality weekly report:
The leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States is tobacco use and in 2015, approximately one in five U.S. adults currently used any tobacco product, with most using combustible tobacco products. (Phillips et al, 2017)
The obvious barriers to addressing this issue include finding the resources, finding professionals who can assist in the smoking cessation programs by dedicating their time, most smokers tend to smoke when they experience stressful situation and if the stress coping techniques offered by professionals, it may decrease the urge to smoke. Chain smokers are usually people who are addicted to smoking. In order to assist them to quit smoking, smoking cessation programs need to be implemented but the funding can be a barrier. As a community based nurse, there is always an opportunity for teaching whenever the nurse interacts with clients. Although, the nurse may not have enough time to teach when clients come to clinic, it will raise the community’s
