America's society today is going through rough times; times where America is looking to its military protect and represent them. This military needs fight for every freedom the American people have, as well as to be its voice across seas to those it interacts with, to be its eyes seeing what the real situation is, to be its ears in hearing all that cannot be heard from the television sets of American homes, and to be its brain in understanding what is actually going on and why. However, this is not what is happening as this country is at war. The soldiers are fighting and protecting, but the people of America have different political and moral views than that of its protectors. These people are not on the front line, and they are not …show more content…
Colonel Mackubin Owens2 addressed this issue in an interview with PBS stating "the military's functional imperative what society asks the military to do attracts a more conservative sort of person," which is practically undeniable. Liberals have always had a more passively aggressive stance on conflict and an opposition towards the military and war. According to Democrat Gazette writer Mike Whitney3, "the United States military is the greatest destabilizing force in the world today" and Democratic leadership "needs to expose this charade and chart a course for the systematic dismantling of the military." These being common views among democrats, many would rather negotiate between the leadership of countries than take a stand and fight in war. For these reasons, it is not surprising that the composition of the military would not parallel that of the society it is fighting for.
Yet another point of the poll was that sixty-six percent of those questioned believed members of the U.S. military had higher moral values than U.S. civilians. This is of course seems more arguable, however when looking at the military lifestyle it becomes more clear as to why this is believed. The military is one of the most demanding professions in the world and the selfless choice to join alone says a great deal about an individual, however its what is required of the individual once
The United States is a land that was created through war. To end a war we must have a solid army to defend the things we want to achieve. Whether its freedom from our fathering country’s or to show the power we have. Understanding how we have come to be from wars like the French and Indian war that sparked the beginning of the American revolution and the military culture and how the experience and significance of our country’s soldiers and militia men compared and brings us to our American military culture and the value’s of American thought, culture, and society. We would not have things like “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”, if it wasn’t for our great nations military force. A time period ranging from about 1755 to 1861 America has dealt with many trials and stipulations that
“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us” (Winston Churchill). The grand stake of this country 's freedom is from the soldiers who serve on our behalf as warriors in the United States military branches. The American men and women who sacrifice their lives are liable to our lives in the freedom that we all withhold as citizens and residents of this great country. It is anticipated by the stretch of war, benefits, and terrific reasoning of joining the military for claims on good reasoning, not only on the side of war but, on the side of reaching great and honorable methods of career and life
Ever since World War II, the last war that garnered full American support, the percentage of American citizens enrolling in the U.S. Army has diminished significantly. The U.S. is a major military power in the present world; American soldiers are engaged in many multi-theater positions, consequently dispersing troops over various regions worldwide. As only one in ten citizens has served in the US Army, American knowledge of military conditions is rapidly lessening along with the national harmony that complements such knowledge. Therefore, the comprehension that American security is closely associated with a formidable military never resonated within the greater part of modern American citizens. Although antiwar activists may decry
In 2014, according to the Department of Defense (DoD) there were 2.2 million Americans serving the military (Hurt, By the Numbers). At the dawn of 2014, there were 317 million members of the American society (Schlesinger, 2014 US). This means less than 1 percent of Americans were serving within the Armed Forces. This small group of the nation’s population comes from every corner of the country and from all walks of life; each one carrying their own set of morals, work ethic, intellect and aspirations. Unfortunately, many of them will have a value system not consistent with the military tradition. These subpar members will not be discovered until years after entrance to the DoD. There is a problem with the current process for entering the military. In order to combat this issue, the DoD should be more selective and discerning during its screening process in order to thwart predators, deny incompetent individuals access to firearms and increasing the quality of troops for the nation to depend on.
The United States army known as the Military is a great gift to the people in America. The Military is an army in which fights for our country voluntarily. Also theirs many reasons I believe the Military is a gift to our generation such as soliders protect us, sacrifice there life so others don't have to, and volunteer freely. I will forever be grateful for the military.
“Support our Troops” is a catchphrase most people in the United States would recognize. Looking at a solider in military uniform, we are automatically trained to think he/she is a “hero” with no questions asked. Contrary to the general belief that all soldiers appreciate the blatant admiration, some soldiers have mixed feelings about this excessive amount of praise. There are a variety of motives why volunteers join the military such as serving the country because of their patriotism and bravery to the monetary benefits the military would provide. As of now, there has been speculation of bringing back the military draft within Congress. The previous drafts only included adult men. But nowadays because equality with women’s rights has grown
The U.S. military has been around since the early days of the United States. They have always been there to provide protection for its citizens. Many people are against war, but most can appreciate what soldiers do to protect this country. Military actions are not cheap though because of the equipment and technology that is required to do their job. The military is a certain service that the United States has needed throughout history, and it is still needed today. Because the military in the United States is undervalued, people need to be informed how important the military is to this country.
The US military is the most powerful organized military for any country in the world. There are currently 1.4 million active duty military personnel and they are paid for their efforts and duties. These brave men and women are paid because ever since the Vietnam War, the United States of America has had a professional military. This means that the common people are not required to serve. The quote that I am going to reflect on is as follows, “Since the Vietnam War, the U.S. wages war with a professional military, thus absolving Americans of any need to sacrifice for the common good. This has altered the relationship between the military and society in ways few Americans seem willing to acknowledge. When those who benefit most from
(intro) Imagine this- you look about the window, see gunfire and American citizens walking around in handcuffs. Two of them are cops and another is someone 's grandfather. Military spending affects everyone living in the US, because the nation’s defense is what keeps us safe. Think about this- world threats are rising, and we are an international superpower. The United States need a strong defense, not a cheap one. Although increased military spending could result in more national debt issues, it would provide a strong defense network for the country and create more military jobs and income.
In society the word “soldier” creates importance. The common usage of the word is an individual who fights or is a part of an army. In the United States a soldier displays utmost importance. The natural feeling one can get when encountering a soldier is pride, freedom, bravery and safety. When looking back to US history a soldier has proven essential to priceless building of American character. The struggles of injustice and fear have been and still continue to be defended with soldiers. The United States invests and trains thousands of soldiers. The Army, Navy, Air force, and Marines are just a few branches of the US military that characterizes the meaning of national pride. Although, the world encounters different perspectives with the term “soldiers”; they can be the opposite of an opposing countries ideology. The US loves their soldier, but countries that have lost to the US military see soldiers inducing fear, power and havoc. The Iraq and Iran wars are seen from the US to gain freedom from possible terror but innocent civilians of these countries see US soldiers as raiders, bringing fear and posing hostility (Dreazen). They fight for something and thus this is the drive to making a soldier.
I have known from an early age that in most group situations, I will be unlike a majority of the people around me. After taking Lewis’ Cultural Classification Survey, I learned a little more vividly why I have the perception that I never quite fit in with my colleagues. I will briefly discuss two things I learned about myself after viewing the survey results, and then I will describe how I believe what I learned affect military operations.
My life changed one August day back in 2002, as a young cadet I had chosen to join the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Regimental Band, the Highty Tighties. My hair was gone and my civilian clothes were put away replaced with an ill-fitting uniform. Now standing at attention back against the wall my First Sergeant, began espousing a company’s motto, “Deeds not Words”. This simple statement over the course of my time at Virginia Tech became my personal moral philosophy.
The united states military fights for our freedom. The military fights for freedom and religious beliefs. They also
As we have discussed in previous chapters; the role of the "industrial machine" and political partisanhip makes a significant impact upon the mission, support and future of US Military Policy. When looking at the role of the DOD and its ongoing actions in regard to: 1.) the continued War in Afghanistan 2.) the recent War against ISIS in Iraq and Syria 3.) on and off actions of Kim Jong-un of North Korea and recent threats against Guam and the US West Coast 4.) nuclear development concerns with Iran- what can you see about the broad role that the DOD has upon foreign affairs in general? Do you see the possible rise of another massive, global war? Do you see a specific constraint impacting the DOD in any of these conflicts specifially or the
There are many different components to war, far beyond the soldiers and battlefields. Soldiers at war may make the ultimate sacrifice in the sequence of battle, but societies at war deal with the compromise. War requires more non-renewable resources than any other industry in the world, the most abundant of those resources being humans. Since July 4, 1776 the US has been in some sort of conflict for 222 of the 239 years since that day. Humans require more basic necessities than any other living organism on the planet. The resources necessary to support a war are endless and can have massive affects on industry, geopolitical structure, populations, educational institutions, and much, much more. With The US having actively participated in war almost the entirety of its existence, war has been impacting everyone and everything in existence be it living or not. Humans alone, without the resources necessary to participate in war, require at least sustenance and shelter just to sustain life. Beyond that there are human needs such as clothing and skills to sustain life within a society. For each of these individuals it is mandatory to obtain one outfit of clothing, one meal a day that is sufficient enough to avoid poor nutrition, one place to sleep. For the women and women of our armed forces these needs are met and merely more. At three meals a day, a place to sleep usually four or more to one room, and three daily outfits including footwear, we can see the military is rather
