The award-winning author, Luis Alberto Urrea, creator of The Hummingbird's Daughter, Into the Beautiful North, and The Devil's Highway, describes The Devil’s Highway which occurred in May of 2001, one of many that impacted the desert on undocumented immigrants. which is a desert located beyond Sonora, Mexico. It is a desert which few turn to in able to cross over. “The Other Wes Moore” is a book written by Wes Moore. This story is based on him and another boy who grew up with the same name, Wes Moore. In this book he explains both his and the other Wes Moore’s childhood. Both of them had a similar childhood and experienced some of the same things. They both grew up without fathers, got involved in drugs, violence, and lived in poverty. Despite having the same circumstances one Wes Moore went to military school and turned his whole life around while the other ended up in prison for the rest of his life. Being a troubled young man from the slums of Baltimore, the other Wes Moore grew and lived in what was around him. When you grow up in the negativity surrounding you, the average person will become a product of their environment or surroundings. Trouble and habit become all you know and once you’re indulged in that kind of lifestyle it becomes harder and harder to stray away from it. The other Wes’ life ended up negatively because of the poor decisions he made as well as the negative environment he grew up in.

The main idea in West Moore's novel, “The Other Wes Moore” is about the different paths that people take, despite going through similar events. Author Wes Moore founded a homogeneous circumstance between himself and the Other Wes Moore, who was in prison for convicted criminals. The Other Wes Moore and Author Wes Moore both experienced a tough childhood. They both grew up in downtown Baltimore and was raised by single mother. Succumbed to their curiosity, they both got involved with drugs; however, individually, they ended up taking different roads towards their future. Through Wes Moore’s The Other Wes Moore, the author tells the story of himself and another man with the same name and a strikingly similar upbringing. In chapter 6 it is revealed that the parental and authority figures in both their lives greatly affected and shaped who they became. By comparing and contrasting the tough choices they made, complications they face at home and at school, and their new authoritative positions, the author uses the two Wes Moore’s lives in Chapter 6 to appeal to pathos, allowing the reader to feel a connection with each character and develop an understanding of both Moore’s accomplishments and hardships.

In this short story by Tim O’Brien, Lieutenant Jimmy cross leads a platoon of men in the Vietnam War. Unable to keep his thoughts from his unrequited love interested, Martha, Cross allowed his platoon to become lax in their duties and mentally removed from the war. The conflict arises when one of his men, Ted Lavender, is killed on a mission. The conflict is resolved when Lieutenant Cross abandons his youthful fantasy world for the reality of the war he is living in. Cross finds new purpose in the vigilant leadership of his men.

The pain and grief of traumatic road accidents can complicate and severely damage many relationships, especially those in small, close knit communities. The line becomes blurred between perpetrators and victims, as beliefs become doubted, and sympathy arises for those who sadly lost their lives, and those who “move on from a moment that threatens to define them forever” (‘Shattered’, 2011). Viewers respond to compassion and remorse shown in the stories, typical views of perpetrators and victims become challenged, demonstrating the enormous influence of a person’s attitude on other’s perspective and opinion of them. Core this year was amazing, I loved it and developed my writing skills beyond what I could ever imagine. I was a strong writer, but honestly, I detested journals. Yes, his core is hard and you will have friends in different cores who appear to being doing less work, which seems unfair, but it means you are learning more. Shawn Spencer, the main character in the TV show Psych, is a hyper observant individual who pretends to be psychic for the Santa Barbara Police Department. He uses his episodic memory, extraversion, and self-regulation in order to solve crimes and be successful in his endeavors.

Jimmy Cross's desires led him to stray away from his mission, which potential got one of his troops killed. Although he did fall for his desires, his motivation kicked in and he started to focus on the real mission, bringing home his troop’s safely. When you think of words that describe a great leader, you often think of words such as brave, determined, fearless, and confident. However this isn’t fully true in Tim Obrien’s book The Things They Carried. Instead of being someone that you could count on to get you home safely, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was nothing but an imitation of a hero.

“I'll be all around in the dark. I'll be everywhere. Wherever you can look—wherever there's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there,” a quote said by Tom Joad from John Steinbeck’s novel Grapes of Wrath. Written during the great depression, John Steinbeck depicts a Oklahoma family traveling to California for work after losing their farm. The main character Tom Joad is first seen as caring only for himself and his family. By the ending the novel Tom has grown from caring about himself to caring and seeing the whole world as his family.

Our actions and interactions with others and society are what define us. Society’s perception of an individual may contrast with that individual’s perception of self. Our actions and interactions with others create certain stigmas which may not change despite progression and change an individual has undergone. But however at the end of the day we are our own creators and we chose who we interact with.

Authors in many instances use the main elements in the story such as setting and narrative to prove a point in the story. For example, writers often use characters, their actions, and their interaction with other characters to support or prove a theme. In the short story “Our Thirteenth Summer”, Barry Callaghan effectively uses characters to develop the theme that childhood is fragile and easily influenced. One of the ways that Callaghan makes effective use of characters to develop the theme is by describing the tension between Bobbie and his parents. This usage of characters supports the theme because Bobbie’s childhood is no longer free to do what he wishes, but has to bow down to his parents’

The phases of life and social context is predicated through the sum of personal feats and experiences as crises and adversity are the greatest motivator which propel individuals to become better than they were before. J.C. Burke’s ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ is an example of the transitional process through entering a new, unknown area which acts as a catalyst for beneficial change. Hindered by emotional and physical turmoil, the protagonist Tom Brennan alleviates his devastated life in the new town of Coghill forming relationships along the way and achieving new goals. Jimmy Cross is the First Lieutenant who carries “the responsibility for the lives of his men” (O’Brien 429). Cross let his imagined love get in the way of his responsibilities and one of his men was killed. Cross carries the weight of Lavender’s death and adds that to the weight of his renewed responsibility to his men (427-437).
