What once was so important to Tom now was the least of his worries. The only thing that was on his mind was his lover. His wife, Clare. He couldn’t believe he fooled himself into thinking
The Journal of the American Medical Association reports the latest break through in the study of gene causing Alzheimer’s has pointed to two genes, chromosomes 2 and 19 that cause the disease (7). The article also points out another gene, A polipoprotein E-e4, is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The reason I chose Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as my Case Study is because it is very personal to me. My Mother-in-law, Marcia, was diagnosed with beginning stages of AD 5 years ago. We believe she went undiagnosed for a couple years before that. AD is a family disease that has a huge impact on an entire family. A year ago we moved in with my in-laws to help care for not only Marcia, but my father-in-law, Larry. Larry was Marcia’s sole caregiver and we noticed over the last couple of years taking care of her full-time was taking a huge toll on him and as family, we needed to be there to help care for them both.
Having not watched this film before I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. In my opinion, every house hold has issues similar or at least must deal with situations that involve feelings. I can somewhat relate to Tom, I too dreaded the thought of having to talk about feelings because in my childhood we never talked about them so as an adult it was difficult to express feelings because of the fear of being hurt. Tom who, in the beginning of the film, uses his humor and wit to avoid the experience of his feelings. His humor was the only way Tom knew how to cope with the sexual, physical and verbal abuse from his childhood.

In the recent years several genes have been pinpointed that are responsible for the disorder, along with twenty genes that have been known to increase and decrease the risk of getting it. Although this newly learned information is helpful it does not fully explain the cause. Scientists have been searching relentlessly to find the explanation to onset Alzheimer's.
