Tom Robinson Found Guilty For Rape Tom Robinson, a Negro man, was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a 19 year old and the daughter of Bob Ewell. The court case took place at the Maycomb County courthouse, and a huge crowd of people, both white and blacks came to watch the trial. The prosecutor was Mr. Gilmer and the defending lawyer was Atticus Finch. The case was directed by Judge Taylor. The result of the trail ended in favor of the pretender, the Ewell family. The crime took place on the evening of November 21st of last year, near the garbage dump. In Maycomb, the Ewells had lived behind the town garbage dump for years which were once a Negro Cabin. She said that it was her first time asking Tom Robinson to come through the fence to help her. Tom Robinson passed the Ewells house everyday to go to work in Mr. Link Deas’ yard. Mayella offered Tom a nickel in exchange of him helping her. Then, as she was getting a nickel to pay, when she turned around, Tom was “on her" and he "got her round the neck". She fought and yelled at him tooth and nail but was unable to get him off her. Afterwards, her father looked from the window and realized what happened. Mayella, then, fainted while Tom Robinson was said to runaway before Mr. Ewell could get him. Then, Mr. Ewell called the sheriff, Mr. Heck Tate. Mayella was sure that Tom Robinson had taken advantage of her. As a defense to the accusation, Tom Robinson was asked to stand. It was shown to everyone in the courthouse that Tom Robinson’s left hand is 12 inches shorter than his right as his left arm was caught in cotton grin since he was 12 years old, his left arm could not be used. The accusation of Tom Robinson raping Mayella Ewell had come into serious question as it was implied by Atticus that it was unlikely for a person to injure his left ability to hurt Mayella’s right eye. There is the possibility of Bob Ewell hurting his own daughter instead of Tom Robinson as he is left-handed.
