The Greatest Presidents Serving as President of the United States is not an easy task to fulfill. Presidents are elected to preside over everyone within the country. Meeting and exceeding all needs of the people can be difficult and not every President has done a great job at that. Over the years, the presidency position has changed immensely; it no longer is the dominant power. The power has been balanced and shifted over time. Although there have been many great Presidents, my top five are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Polk, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt; through their character, accomplishments, and work ethic. George Washington was an outstanding first President for the United States of America, as he set the presidency for all preceding presidents. He served as president starting in 1789 and ending in 1797. Having been the only president in history to be unanimously voted for, just goes shows how much the people supported him and what he stands for. Washington demonstrated the power of the federal government by acting on the Whisky Rebellion in 1794. Although, he also chose to keep the United States neutral because we were a new country, this did not reduce tension. However, he signed the Jay Treaty to continue trade relations with Britain. From 1801-1809, Jefferson accomplished a lot. During his presidency, the occurrence of Marbury vs Madison case led to the Supreme Courts power, which is still in use to this day. In 1803, Jefferson expanded the United States by purchasing the Louisiana Territory. This was controversial because he purchased it for $15 million, however, this did immensely expand the United States. He was also the one to send Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition to explore the new territory. This casual and secretive President turned out to have a huge impact on our county
