Toronto in 1915, was undergoing many changes from the previous century and developing into a city with a future of becoming a global phenomenon. Toronto, is known for its buildings, culture and history. However, these buildings, culture, and history did not come from nowhere. These came from the actions of the predecessors who wanted to develop Toronto into a marvel that shows its history within the walls of several buildings. The buildings that I visited, showed the history that was presented within the novel. Although, some did change in their appearance, and others in their function. I was able to understand their importance in the past and the present. At the corner of King and Bay, was the Toronto Telegram building. However, today it now

The large influx of Greek and Italian immigrants is very prevalent in the neighbourhood, where it was named the largest Greektown in North America since the mid 1970s. This large population is also exhibited in the vast amount of Greek-run businesses, especially in the western region of the neighbourhood, providing Torontonians an up-close view into the Greek culture and way-of-life. In addition, the aged architecture from the early 1900s showcases how Toronto grew into the city it has now become, with each building in the neighbourhood preserving a certain function from that time period, such as the Danforth Music Hall. This allows Torontonians to obtain a deeper understanding of the vague history our city
The city, Toronto in this case, presents a web of streets and geographical space that threatens to lock its citizens in a certain demarcated way of life and conduct. The four key characters in this narrative - Tuyen, Carla, Jackie, and Oku - each feel blocked in by the constrained locality that they have been born into and each attempts to escape it in his own way.: Tuyen by being an artist, Carla by being a courier; Oku by being a student and Jackie by working in a store. The first two not only attempt to escape by means of their profession using their profession to either flee the spaces and squares (by bike) or transcend it via imagination (by art) but they also adopt profession that go against societal expectations. These societal expectations were created by, and exist within the geographical space they live in. Toronto of the late 20th century had an internalized set of expectations for immigrants and its citizens. The parents of the characters succumbed to it. The protagonists, however, resolved to step out of their boundaries and most of them succeeded.

If you have ever been to Philly, you have probably passed it at one time—an old abandoned building, which at one time was the center of Philadelphia attention. I have travelled through Philadelphia many times and have passed this impressive Victorian style building. Despite its abandoned and rundown appearance, I have always said that this building had so much beauty and potential. The outside of the building has intricate arching and architecture, and has eye-catching brick and stone detailing. Driving down Broad Street, going from North Philly towards the center of downtown, my eyes always drifted to the left to stare at this building—a structure somewhat resembling the “Tower of Terror” from Disney World. After passing this building various times, my mind began to question if this building was at one time a well-kept and prosperous place. As I passed this building once more, I took note of the rickety sign that sits on top of the building that reads “Divine Lorraine Hotel”. I began research on the hotel and had never envisioned the history which stands behind that old desolate building. At one time, the Divine Lorraine Hotel was the place to live in Philadelphia. Broad Street was a populated and flourishing area in the city. So what is the history behind this building and what ever happened to the Divine Lorraine Hotel? The hotel of striking architecture, through years of history, fell to shambles after being one of the most successful hotels in Philadelphia.
What is that strange orange brick building? Why should I care about that? That striking orange, brick building is the Guardian Building of downtown Detroit. When deciding to go to a historical site in the city, I was drawn in by the history of the place. I am relatively new to the city and when I heard about this place, I knew that’s where I wanted to go. When our group traveled together to the site, it became apparent why this building is not only important to Detroit, but to all cities. The Guardian Building was not only a great fixture of the past, but it is a leading example of the efforts to bring a city back to greatness.
Independence, the state of being free from outside control, and not subject to another’s authority. The 1920s and 1930s were a time for Canada to leave its British roots behind and forge its own identity, as well as take control of all matters relating to the preservation of the country and its people. However, this was not the case. Canada, although receiving some leeway from the British, remained a dependent country under the thumb of outside forces due to the fact that they were still under the British North American Act, thereby not having their own constitution, as well as the English monarch remaining as the head of state, and because it moved its economic dependence off the shoulders of one nation and unto another’s. Although the Chanak Affair showed that Canada’s military was no longer obligated to fight

The growth rate of Vancouver has been increasing; the population went up by 200,000 from 2006 to 2011 ("Vancouver Population 2016."). As the growth rate goes up, it results in a rise in the birth rate as well. Vancouver is a very diverse area with many ethnic groups and cultures. The 3 main ethnic groups in Vancouver consist of Caucasian, South Asian Origins, and Southeast and east origins. Vancouver being diverse could attract many others to migrate. The majority of Vancouver's area is very dense which also leads to it being a clustered area due to the big population in a tight area, the densest

Today technology allows us to construct structures that we would never have been able to make in the past. Some of the creations are impressive based on what they accomplish but others are masterpieces in themselves. Man’s capability to build such tall buildings, as the skyscrapers we are familiar with covering our cities today, is a major expression of the advancements we have made as a culture. The power necessary to build such tall structures inspired competition between architects to see who could build the tallest one. One skyscraper that has inspired many and served as a model, for high rise buildings that were created after, is the Chrysler Building. The Chrysler Building serves as an identifying mark to anyone that
Canada faced dramatic changes through the decades of the 1960’s and 1970’s, but in particular the province of Quebec. In 1959, Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis died, this marked the beginning of the Quiet Revolution. Duplessis was the Union Nationale leader and the party had controlled Quebec for decades until shortly after Duplessis’ death, a provincial election was held where the Liberals, led by Jean Lesage, had won the vote. The Liberals started moving away from the Catholic ideologies, traditions were being shifted and a transformed society was taking over the province of Quebec. Lesage was famously quoted in 1962 “There is no doubt in my mind; it’s now or never that we must become masters in our own home.” which became the Liberals
