Ken Wiwa presents several ideas pertaining to language and culture within his essay, Get Beyond Babel. Wiwa explains that every language has a chance of dying out over time. For any language to survive through years of societal changes, it must be adapted so it can be used to embrace other cultures, new technology and new perspectives. Wiwa presents the concept that language is the same as culture. I do not agree with this concept because I believe that culture is carried by the people, not by the language.

Language is important in every children`s everyday life. Children need language to communicate with others and to be able to perceive the world. Language is extremely significant in the human culture. Language to most people seems to just be a combination of words and letters, but it is much more than that. Language holds more meaning than most people realize; as it connects people not only vocally, but culturally as well. The main purpose of language is clearly to connect people within similar areas and give them a way to communicate. However, all languages have history behind them, which adds to their meaning.

Gee and Hayes (2011, p. 8) explain, questions, order, and statements can be expressed through language and human languages all share the same elements, “they all have vowels and consonants and syllables… nouns, verbs, sentences and clauses grammatically” (Gee and Hayes, 2011, p. 8, para. 7).

Although, there is no agreed definition of language among linguists, but we can say that language is the most sophisticated way of communication between any two human beings and far more complex than any other system of communication. Variations can be in the same language or different languages. Variations in languages can be accents, pronunciations, dialects, and grammar (Language). For example, in America, and in the United Kingdom we speak English, but our accents, pronunciations, and even word usage is very different.
