I decided to release some stress, and go meet new people from other schools. Throughout this process I learned a lot about what other states were dealing with and what students wanted out of their education systems. I had knowledge about what the North Carolina education system was going though, but I had no clue as to the depth of problems that other states were dealing with. At this point, I decided to stand up for all the students in all states and address ten thousand people during my national beta club campaign speech for secretary. As Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai said, “I raise up my voice-not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard”. I wanted to advocate for opportunities that all students in this country should have access to. I used my national campaign speech to talk about the issues, concerns, and dreams of other students throughout the United States and wanted to project all of the voices that I had listed to throughout this journey. I used my voice to advocate for others who did not have the opportunity and I am now National Beta Club Secretary. Local school board meetings are a venue that allows the public to attend and be a part of the educational process. These meetings provide community members with important information about upcoming events so that they are able to be well informed of the happenings that are taking place within the school system in which their child attends. Along with being able to learn about what is taking place within the school, it also allows parents and parent groups the opportunity to express their opinions and concerns about matters that could likely affect their children. Monthly school board meetings are a way to help establish and maintain open lines of communication between the school and community members. By allowing the community members the opportunity to be heard, it further enhances the relationship between the school and the community.

The Hallsville Independent School District board meeting was very conductive. An agenda was handed out to everyone present, and it had every point to be made at the meeting neat and organized for everyone to follow. The meeting is mostly open to the public which provides a great way for everyone to feel up to date with what is going on in the school district, and be able to help in any way they can when problems arise. Once the superintendent had finished speaking about who was being recognized, the updated itinerary, and the HISD Education Foundation Report, he closed the meeting from the public. School board meetings benefit the community by letting the people not associated with a job through the school know what is going on in the district.

I went to the San Bernardino City Unified School District Board meeting that took place on October 3, 2017. In this board meeting, there were a lot of interesting topics that that were discussed. The board members voted on various topics throughout the board meeting, the community could see the members’ votes. This board meeting focused more on High School students rather than on Elementary students.

On September 6th, I attended the Cleveland County school board meeting. I grew up in a nontraditional schooling environment; therefore, attending a school board meeting was a new experience for me. On the agenda, the board covered subjects such as nominating in new board members, honoring new teachers in the county schools, getting approval for a new basketball court, and asking for approval for a high school trip to Germany in the summer of 2017.

The one topic that I found the most interesting was Wegscheider-Cruse’s and Blacks family roles. I really enjoyed this section because it got me thinking about which role I best fit and all of the various ways that my family members and I adapted to the substance abuse issues that occurred in our household. After lots of thought, I came to conclusion that I took on the role as the hero/responsible child. I always did really well in school and in the sports that I played. I always felt bad about for my family and what everyone had to go through and sacrifice so I found myself trying to succeed and bring a more positive light into the family. I never wanted to cause any issues with anyone or be difficult because I never wanted to add to all of the stress. Growing up I was by far, more responsible than my older brother. Although the oldest child normally takes on the role of the hero, this role fit me best. I would like to think that I have really good organization skills and have set reasonable goals throughout life that I have been able to achieve. It was very clear to me that I could not rely on my father growing up because of his substance abuse issues. This pushed me to be very independent knowing that my mother already had a lot on her plate.

One topic that interested me was the nutrition and weight status goal. The goal for this topic is to “promote health and reduce chronic disease risk” by having a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy body weight. This has been a goal during the past decades and since it hasn’t been met in the past it is on this decade’s goal list again. This webpage talks about the importance of nutrition and a healthy weight along with the risks of being overweight. Those who take care of themselves by eating right and maintaining a healthy weight are less likely to develop chronic diseases, experience complications during pregnancy (women), and die at an earlier age. This webpage also gives statistics on how we are performing as a country. This is important to see what still needs to be done to achieve these goals by the end of the

I teach in the Westside Consolidated Number Five School District in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The school district is a consolidation of three small rural town school districts Bono, Egypt, and Cash, Arkansas in 1968. I met with my mentor Mr. Scott Gaunt the school district superintendent on January 18, 2017 between meetings with district leaders and countywide superintendents. We met and discussed the community relations plan and identified the two most important issues for our district as identified in the poll by the Phi Delta Kappan and the Gallop poll. The issues were the lack of financial support for the school district to provide an adequate education for students and the testing and regulations imposed on school districts that lower educational time for students while in school.

Every school district has board meetings throughout the school year. Unfortunately, many parents, community members, & school personnel do not attend such important meetings because they don’t realize or understand the importance of such board meetings or how informative they can be. The Dahlonega City Hall was crowded on the evening of March 1st 2010. The seats were full, except for at the very front, and the standing room was filled almost out the door. The crowd, mostly made up of students, leaned in to hear as the voices of the City Council members faded in and out of the faltering sound system. The six City Council members and the mayor sat along a bench as if they were the judges at a hearing. Because of the ongoing discussions and the crowd, I thought I had arrived a few minutes late; but I was able to find a seat in the front two rows. The results of this survey provide critical information for the writing and performance of my town hall speech, including both which arguments will be most effective in persuading my audience as well as the persuasive methods that will be of most use to me. Questions 1, 18, and 20 provide information about the audience’s knowledge of the current state of debt in Ohio, as well as allowing the audience the opportunity to contribute information about any debts that they have incurred. The results for each of these questions are particularly beneficial to my topic, as it pertains to debt among the millennial generation, which includes the students who participated in the survey. For example, in question 1, over half of the respondents indicated that they believed higher education would be the largest financial burden for them. This indicates that the audience is personally affected by or at least aware of the issue of rising college tuition, which leads to large student loans, the major source of debt for the millennial generation. Similarly, in question 18, sixty-three percent of respondents revealed that they will have some amount of student loans upon completing their undergraduate education. Again, this means that the audience is aware of the issue of student loan debt for the millennial generation, and it is probable that they have some kind of knowledge about the adverse effects of possessing student loan debt.
