The Toyota Tundra is a full-size truck and a late arrival to a segment dominated by Detroit’s three manufacturers. Introduced in 2000, the original model came in smaller than its competitors, before Toyota resized the truck to give it a more competitive advantage. 2014 to Present Upon the truck’s release, Toyota said that the 2014 model represented the next generation of its full-size pickup truck. Some contend that the model is merely a refresh, as the truck underwent mostly cosmetic, interior and technology changes while its footprint and powertrain choices remain unchanged. A Double Cab was added in 2003 and the extended cab model was renamed the Access Cab. Special trims were available at times too, including a T3 Special Edition marketed in conjunction with the release of the Terminator 3 movie in 2003. The second-generation model thoroughly updated the Tundra as it assumed a footprint equaling trucks from GM, Ford and Chrysler. Toyota also responded to the release of the Nissan Titan just three years earlier. Engine choices for the 2007 to 2009 Tundras included a 4.0-liter, V-6 engine matched with a 5-speed automatic; a 4.7-liter, V-8 paired with a 5-speed automatic; and a 5.7-liter V-8 paired with a 6-speed automatic. From 2010 to 2013, a the middle engine was replaced with one displacing at 4.6 liters and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission; the two other engine choices remained. All three engines came with Regular and Double cab models matched with either 6.6-foot or 8.1-foot beds. The four-door Crew cab had the two V-8 engines and a 5.6-foot bed only.
