There approximately 363 million guns in america. Guns should have tracking devices in them. The first reason in so police could go to a crime scene and know if the criminal had a gun. The second reason is so people could find lost or stolen guns. The final reason is so the government could see who has bought and sold guns.
The police would be able to go to a crime scene and know if the criminal had a gun around or not. Guns are a very deadly weapon that if used wrong they can cause injury or even death. According to Heeding God’s Call gun violence statistics ,”There are 30,000 people are killed by a gun a year. This proves that guns are deadly if they are used wrong. There are also a lot of guns in the United States. According to Injury

Guns cost a lot of money and some people actually want to have their guns so they can provide meat and protection for their family. There are a number of guns that are stolen every year. As the Brady Campaign says,” In one year, there are at least 30,000 guns lost [from household people].” This proves that if guns had tracking devices in them that the number of guns lost would reduce by a large number. Businesses who sell guns also have to sell guns for income so they can keep their business. As Dan Noyes quotes,” 23,775 guns have been reported lost, missing, or stolen from businesses.” If a gun is stolen from a business that business has just lost money. If the police can find a gun and return it to the company and get the criminal off the streets then it is a win-win situation for both the company and the town. There are a large number of guns that are sold in the United States each year. As ATF says,” there is an estimated 4.5 million guns sold each year in the United States.” This statistic shows that there are a lot of guns sold each year. If the police could see the location of these guns they them could see if they are with people who shouldn’t have guns. Fact check stated that,”40% of guns are sold without a background check.” These guns are sold privately and not in a store. A criminal could go to a new city and meet new people and get a gun from a person who didn't know that he was a criminal. This guy could then go back to where he is from and create more crime. Robert Verbruggen quoted,” approximately 40% of guns are sold privately after they have been bought from a business.” The guns that are sold after they get bought from a store are sold without a background check. These guns would be able to be seen on the police radar and the police would be able to see who has possession of the guns. All in all, guns are bought and sold every day and if the police could see where and when they were sold they could cut down on the crimes in
Overview of Main Points: Having a firearm registration law would potentially lead to the identification and prosecution of violent criminals. Also, criminals who have been through the justice system would legally be unable to purchase firearms. Finally, law enforcement agencies would be better prepared to do their job with knowledge on what kind of firearms the suspect might have.
According to “Closing Illegal Gun Markets”, “Forty percent of all annual firearm sales are through secondary or informal markets which involves felons, friends, and family and do not go through licensed retailers.” That number is almost half of all gun sales and of the half that go through licensed retailers. It is unknown how many people are purchasing guns for people who could not buy one legally. The problem with illegal gun purchases lies in the national background check system that is used, when someone purchases a gun at a licensed retailer. When these people go into buy a weapon, we have no idea what their intentions are. If they can pass the background check they are able to walk out with any guns they chose, from there these guns can end up in anyone’s hands. Background checks are not sufficient to stop gun violence due to back doors in the system and lack of punishment for offenders.
Laws have been put into place to help insure that guns are only sold to the people that are able to pass back ground checks. “With the 1994 Brady Handgun Violence and Prevention Act, Congress imposed a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases to allow law enforcement officers time to perform criminal background checks of potential buyers” (Front Line). This does not mean that guns do not fall into the hands of children and adults who are not lawfully registered to own them. There are guns shows that are held in almost any U.S. town at any given time, most of the dealers follow protocol but some do not. Pawn shops also buy and sell guns on a daily basis; most of these guys are just out to make a quick sell. They have no idea if the gun that they are buying was just used in a crime or not.
Secondly, a major problem in the background checking system is the gun show/ private sale loophole. When gun stores sale a gun federal statutes demand that a background check must be done and records of the transaction must be recorded. However, if you are private seller you do not need a licensed nor do you need to adhere to federal mandates, “an estimated 40% of all firearms transferred in the U.S. are transferred by unlicensed individuals” (Philip J. Cook & Jens Ludwig). In the documentary “Black Market”, which explores the inner workings of the black market, a gun runner explains that he buys guns at local gun shows in the South without any background checks and then loads up the guns and brings them up North to cities like New York and
Government regulations on the sales of firearm is one of the biggest issue on society. For example, people with mental illness and convicted felons possess guns. There’s a few ways to people like them can own a gun. Like they would need a background check, own a license, and a legal citizen to own a firearm. All these ideas can put the future in a good shape because of gun safety technology.
There shouldn’t be any loopholes in gun laws. For example, anyone could easily purchase a gun at a gun show with no background check or anything else according to the article on the web site Governing, “Known as the ‘gun show loophole,’ most states do not require background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows from private individuals -- federal law only requires licensed dealers to conduct checks.” Furthermore, another thing is people purchasing guns to sell them to others with no documentation or anything else. The idea that I propose to fix the current problem with guns is having a check up on the guns that people purchased every 6 months. In the recent shooting that happened in Florida, the shooter easily purchased a gun in spite of the fact that he wrote a youtube comment that hints his plans for the shooting according to the article How gun background checks work published by CNN, “ He even made explicit threats that foreshadowed Wednesday's massacre. Last fall, a YouTube user going by the name ‘nikolas cruz’ left the following
Gun control is major issue plaguing America. Due to America having loose gun laws, people constantly import foreign weapons. Currently, federal law prohibits certain people from owning firearms, such as those with certain types of criminal records, mental illness, drug addicts, immigrants without legal status, veterans who left the military with a dishonorable discharge, and anyone with a restraining order, and several others. Federal law requires that licensed gun dealers conduct a background check through a F.B.I. database, to see if the customer is prohibited from owning a gun. However, there are major issues with the system. There are incomplete listings of criminal cases and that small-scale sellers
The image of an unknown criminal breaking into your house is important because it justifies keeping a gun in the home. This means that a gun allows anyone regardless of their statuette or physical health, they to can defend themselves from a criminal no matter how big or strong the criminal may be. Guns can also be a great way to prevent crime. It is likely that gun ownership can cut the rate of violent crimes because a criminal thinks you might be armed, they may be less likely to choose you as a victim.
The problem with statements like the above is that people are forgetting about the black market. If a person is planning on buying a handgun for criminal purposes, he is not likely to buy it through a dealer. If he buys a gun through a dealer, the gun has to be registered in that person’s name. If the gun is used in any crime or murder where a shot is fired and the gun is left behind, the police could very easily trace the gun to that person.
Gun laws are very strict. In legal sales, regulations are so strict anything slightly off means a gargantuan penalty (#2 P1). Unfortunately, yet understandably, illegal gun sales are much harder to regulate, for obvious reasons. Black market sales are constant, undocumented, and usually cheaper than buying a registered weapon, making it that much harder to find the seller(#2 P2). Unlicensed gun dealers are allowed by Federal law to sell guns online, at gun shows, and in person, these salesmen are considered “private” sellers. Since they aren’t registered, they are not required to do background checks or keep record of their purchasers, though it is advised(#2 P4).
Firstly, gun registrations have failed in many ways. In “some states 90% of gun owners have unregistered firearms,” according to James. New York, for example, has “ nearly 1 million people of gun owners not registered,” according to Forbes. Another reason why gun registration doesn’t work is the black or grey market. A survey of inmates show overwhelmingly that criminals obtain guns on the black market or the grey market. Having gun registration hasn’t
The Gun laws today make it incredibly easy to purchase a gun. At a licensed gun store, all someone has to do is walk in and fill out some paperwork, then wait for a background check to be ran on themselves.(4). Accorrding to Money.cnn.com this backround check denies less than 1% of people who take it. This means that out of one hundred million gun buyers only seven hundred thousand people are denied(4). Another way to purchase a gun is through a gun show. Gun shows occur almost weekly around the U.S. At a gun show, no background check is required to purchase a gun(4). This takes away the one true element of protection we have from criminals buying guns. Pbs.org says that “almost all guns used in criminal acts enter circulation
The second reason that we need a new system is because of the concealed carry law. Concealed carry can be a blessing or a curse, it can sometimes
Even if possessing a gun is illegal, criminals will always have a way of possessing a gun. According to a study done by Mark Judge in 2015, “Of the 70 who admitted to having access to a gun, the survey found that only two (3 percent) were purchased directly from a gun store. Most had gotten their guns illegally: “adults who are entitled to possess a gun are more likely than not to buy from an FFL [licensed dealer].” Criminals can effortlessly obtain a gun with money through the black market. They are very unlikely to walk into a gun store to buy a gun. Therefore background checks do not affect criminals at all. Many gun control advocates have thought of methods to restrict guns to criminals such as background checks, limiting the size of magazines, and regulating the type of guns. In the article, Making Gun Control Happen, written by a pro-gun control advocate Patrick Radden Keefe deems that, “One obvious change would be to mandate a criminal background check for all gun purchases.” The more gun control laws, there are, the easier is it for criminals to act out their crime due to there being a less of a chance for a citizen stopping the criminal with a
The process would also be very lengthy and difficult to acquire. Registration of guns could also possibly take days or even weeks. For instance, the background information would have to be detected and information from every owner would have to be pulled. Registration or gun licenses could result in consequences such as, fingerprint detections from a past crime by another individual. Furthermore, the background checks used today are good enough and should not be regulated more. It would be best for if it remained the way it is today without adjustments being made.
