2. I learned many aspects of traditional American Indian life that I had not known previously, such as their customs and traditions. In the Andes, ethnic identity and place of origin was often expressed by hats. The unique colors and designs could help distinguish a person, as the patterns were unique to the groups that made them. I also learned interesting facts like the Andean people knowing for thousands of years that the bark of a quina tree cures malaria, yet catholic missionaries did not learn this until the 1600s resulting in quinine to become a very valuable export to Europe right after its discovery, saving countless lives. Beads were also a prominent part of the American Indian life. Native people saw brightly colored beads as prized

Despite having little rights, hardworking women and children were often the key to success for independent farms. For these small, family-run farms, the children were often the ones who helped work and manage the land. Women were often the backbone of a household, doing the housework, weaving, cooking, and raising large amounts of children. Women were practically required to bear many children over a lifetime in order to staff the farm to maintain the family’s livelihood.
Culture, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is stated as “The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior that dpends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. The customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of a racial, religious or social group. The set shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. The set of values, conventions or social practices associated with a particular field, activity or societal characteristic.” Of these four definitions, I shall be focusing on the second one to discuss what makes up the culture of American Indians. The culture of the various tribes that made up the Native Americans is one of close knit families, highlyspiritual peoples and living together as one with the land they lived on. They believed in spirits, worshiping and honoring them. Some settled into single locations while others were nomadic, but all had a focus on working with the land around them. Because there are so many varying tribes that make up Native
Native American culture originated in some parts North America. These countries are known as the United States of America and some parts of Canada. In the United States, there are 6.6 million Native Americans, which form about 2.0 percent of the population (Bureau, 2016). Europe had realized there were about 50 million people already living the “new world” and these people were called Native Americans. Native Americans were originally called Indians, but later through history they formed a new name. These people were called this because of them being native to the “new world” and the American part came after the colonist named the United States. Throughout history, Native Americans believed that using raw material in nature was the best way to provide for their people. Their culture thought no part of an animal should go to waste. They would eat the meat, use the skin for clothing, and make jewelry from the bones. Over the years a lot of their culture and customs were lost due to conforming with society. Their languages were referred to as “Indigenous Languages” because of them being extremely complicated and diverse. Some important factors that help understand the foundation of Native American culture are their rituals/practices, death ceremonies, holidays, family, and stereotypes.
The Eastern Woodland Indians was an Indian tribe that was located around the stretch from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. Usually the Woodland Indians had settled west from the Atlantic. The Eastern Woodland tribe also settled from Canada in the North all the way to The Gulf of Mexico in the South. The Indians of The Eastern Woodlands tribe had spoke several different languages and dialects. According to www.indians.org, “Additionally, there were many groups such as the Cayuga, Mohawk, Onondaga, and Seneca tribes”. Many different parts of the Eastern Woodlands economy encouraged them to become a civilization such as the habitat of the Eastern Woodlands, the shelter, the food, and the culture of the Eastern Woodlands Indians.
Native American, or American Indians, have a rich culture comprised of struggle, strife and success. For this paper, i will discuss the Native American Culture and it's history.
Every country and nation has they own special festivals and music, and Native American is no exception. First, the native music related many aspects such as ritual, life and work. They like to combine music with dance, and the Native American music always created rich percussion instruments. For example, the hand drum, log drum, water drum and rattle, etc. Powwow is an important festival and ritual for the Native American, and it is a symbol for the tradition culture of Native Indians. After reaching the coast, many captives were confined to slave forts, slave castles, or outdoor holding pens. The slaves could then spend anywhere from days up to a year in these factories awaiting a horrible, yet unknown journey ahead of them. The living conditions for the male and female captives in these forts, castles, or holding pens were horrible. They were treated like a piece of trash. Some of the captives were assimilated into the waterside markets, and some were separated from their life. The captives were turning into the “independence beings into human commodities.” Independence beings into human commodities mean that the traders for captives were turning the captives into a property. When the traders turned the captives into a
Several hundred years ago, Native Americans had to survive in the New World without the creature comforts we have today. The winters in prehistoric Ohio are historic for being harsh. This shows that the Native Americans knew exactly how to survive the winter without the abundant resources in today’s society. The three things I would focus on if I had to survive a winter in prehistoric Ohio is shelter, food and water, and forming a culture with the other people around me.
Where the Sioux tribe lived was in Minnesota, Nebraska, South and North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Montana, Northern Illinois and South Central Canada.
Before the Indians were forced to live on reservation, they fought to keep their nation. For instances, several irate young Indians mistakenly killed some settlers on their way to a reservation. Their tribe leader Chief Joseph convinced them to head to Canada because he knew soldiers were headed their way to kill them and the rest of the tribe. Only a few were able to make it. Chief Joseph and the others surrendered. He was tired of all that the incomers had done to them, from killing of the bison to taking the land. Other tribes try to hold on by doing religious rituals. For an example, they had one called the Ghost Dance in which they saw in a vision that the land and the buffalo was restored to them again. It gave them hope, but scared the
Many Indians and early settlers, such as the Puritans, viewed nature and spirituality in the same manner. Each group of people believed they carried their own individual beliefs, traditions and spirituality that they could then integrate into the nature and environment around them. Both groups were said to have been bonded to their culture and practices and with that they brought the practices to every new region, enforcing their ideals among others. Both groups used spirituality to guide their practices and views within nature. For example, for the Puritans their exploration of nature came from the ideas formed from biblical references and imagery and they used these images and ideals to transform the forest environment. Just as the Indians
In Chief Dan George’s essay, I am A Native of North America, he describes the differences between Native American lifestyle and White lifestyle. Native Americans very deeply care about nature all of their beliefs are surrounding nature. Whether they worshiped the sun, the sky, and the moon. Or maybe they worshiped the grass, the water, and the animals. There are differences. The indigenous lived communally in large tribes were everyone knew everyone else. They shared, traded, and families lived together.
