A traditional family is a family where the Dad and Mum both work and the kids stay at home and they all live under the same roof. It is a social construct that varies from culture to culture and, over time, the definition changes within a culture.
Family guy is a popular television show that is often viewed as one of the funnier shows the television has to offer. Whilst there are issues that are relatable to most families in today’s society. I don’t believe that the family reflects the real-world. The show is politically incorrect as Writers use stereotypes to create humour. Stereotypes are used because they are easily relatable to the audience. Unfortunately, these stereotypes are often believed and spread amongst people which often leads

His role in the family is to work, protect and provide. However, he is ‘’immature, obese, car-free, risk-taking, out spoken, dim-witted and an alcoholic.’’ This is why the audience laugh, because of the way he projects himself and how immature he is around his family. Unfortunately, being obese can lead to an early death and for the show to make it so irrelevant is concerning. Alcoholism is also a devastating disease and ruins families and should not be taken lightly when this cartoon has such a young audience.
Lois is Peter's wife and the mother of Chris, Meg, and Stewie. She is a housewife who cares for her kids and her husband. Lois thinks that the past she had, has made her a better person. This character is probably the closest to reality with the way she cares for her kids and families.
Meg is the Griffins' 18-year-old eldest child and only daughter. She is a self-conscious, unattractive teenage girl with severely low self-esteem being portrayed as generally soft and non-rebellious. The other family members treat her as an object of abuse and belittle her by saying she must be adopted. Megs character probably hits close to home for many teenage girls. Whilst having her family members say she is adopted and ridicule her may be funny on the surface, many teenagers can probably see what is wrong with
The racist jokes that are often made in Family Guy obviously does not bother its viewers. Family Guy has garnered such a huge fan base that when the character Brian was killed off it caused a huge uproar on social media. An article written by Danielle Cox asked if the fans’ “attachment to a cartoon character any different from other TV show characters?” (Cox). This deals with a death of a character not anything controversial, but it is
During the time of the 80s, there were many television shows that portrayed traditional families. A traditional family, which is two married parents of the opposite gender and their child or children. Even though, Full house doesn’t necessary mirror the traditional family values that all society knows, it’s one of the shows that helped break gender stereotypes. For example, the whole family tradition “norm” was that women would be the caregivers and men would provide for their family. In Bittney Davis article, “Recognizing Gender Roles in Nostalgic TV Series Full House” she mentions, “The expectation of a male’s purpose in the household is to provide for and
The definition of the "typical" American family has changed considerably over time. Ever since the age of television dawned on American culture, situation comedies have tried to portray the typical American family in an attempt to reach as many viewers as possible. In the 1950's, there was "Leave It to Beaver" which represented a generic view of the American family during its time. There was a father whose responsibility was to financially support the family and be a role model for his children. There was a mother whose job was that of a typical housewife, taking care of the home and caring for the children. And there were the children who had no responsibilities, except to respect their parents and listen to their advice when
Family Guy, an animated sitcom about a New England family and their everyday dilemmas, is a way for viewers to see the comedic side of a dysfunctional family. The Griffins consist of Peter and Lois, the patriarch and matriarch, and Meg, Chris, and Stewie are the children(Family Guy). Every character is different from the next character. They are also weird in their own way. The television show itself displays feminism, structuralism, and gay and lesbian criticism. Each character in the show also displays those criticisms in a certain fashion. Family Guy can be offensive to viewers with its satire, and the way the show delivers its message can make the family and the other characters in the show seem dysfunctional.
While sitcoms address stereotypes with humor, I believe they perpetuate beliefs that are harmful to society. In The Goldbergs, stereotypes were subtly incorporated by a member of the ethnic group it portrays, nonetheless the stereotypes prevalence alone caused the audience to subconsciously accept the stereotypes as reality. The show’s immediate conflict surrounding a hat and the possibility of infidelity reminded me of another fictional Jewish immigrant story, Abraham Cahan’s Yekl, which I read for an immigrant literature course last semester. Both Molly and Gitl, Yekl’s wife, face similar scrutiny from their husbands about how they dress and question their husband’s fidelity. However, Gitl loses Yekl to another Jewish woman he believes is
The word stereotype in the dictionary should include a picture of the fictional character Archie Bunker, from the 1970s sitcom titled “All in the Family.’ It is hard to find just one example of an episode that showcases the level this character will stoop to stereotype someone; however, I selected an episode titled, (Sammy’s Visit), that is considered one of the sitcoms finest.
The traditional American family comes from the 1950s, when TV shows like Leave It to Beaver and Ozzie and Harriet were released. They were the model to follow and create the family that the myth promotes. Parents happily married, nice house in suburbia, and a harmonious home are common traits of the model American Family. The myth of the American family creates a template for other families to follow; however, it only reflects to Caucasian families and creates a disappointment on today’s society.
Depending on their cultural background, many families will often have different understandings or ideas of what a family is and how it should be structured.
Family Guy is notorious for their, what some would say, crude jokes; although, they are just really shedding light on truthful things going on in the world today. Basically, the show says things that the rest of the world is scared to speak on. Peacocke also noticed this, that the creators did not mean any harm by the
Based on Rachael’s “How to Be a Fan of Problematic Things,” there are three things that a person should consider and acknowledge about problematic shows, like Family Guy, that they enjoy watching. First, you should recognize that what you enjoy watching is, indeed, problematic without justifying it or make excuses for it. Next, you should be fully engaged about the problematic elements rather than brushing over or deflect them. Finally, you should be aware of and acknowledge all interpretations of the media you enjoy—even if some interpretations are less favorable to you. These are the three components that Rachel discusses extensively in her work and this is exactly how I would discuss Family Guy with my family, friends, and other people.
Modern Family, created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan shows viewers stereotypes when it comes to women. This is shown through the main female characters, Claire (Julie Bowen), Gloria (Sofia Vergara) Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Alex (Ariel Winter). Claire is depicted as being an uptight, naggy stay at home mother, Gloria as a hot blooded attractive trophy wife, Haley as an unintelligent teenager who only has her looks to offer and Alex, who is the nerdy and unattractive sister.
I think that Family Guy has a good portrayal of stereotypes. The stereotypes they use go along very well the character and how that character
Today society displays greater diversity within households. Most American households are now non-traditional or unconventional. Non-traditional or unconventional families include; single parenthood, singlehood and LGBT relationships. Modern family is a comedy exploring the different “modern” families. This show explores a huge unconventional family through a gay couple, made up of Mitchell and Cameron, and their adopted daughter Lily; a straight couple comprised of Phil and Clare, and their three children, Luke, Alex and Hayley; and a multicultural family which is comprised of Jay and his much younger wife Gloria and their son Manny. Modern family explores how the present day family is defined and , modern America means for family members. Despite Modern family’s groundbreaking success in representing non traditional families, the show continues to reinforce heteronormative values through stereotypes of queer identity in regards, gender roles within the relationship, gay adoptive parents and gay marriage.
Among currently running animated sitcoms, there are a few that have current connections to people and events. Most famous of this genre of shows are South Park and Family Guy. Unlike South Park, which follows a group of friends at school, Family Guy is about a family. The Griffin family consists of parents Peter and Lois, their children Chris, Meg, Stewie, and the family dog, Brian. Instead of showcasing the adventures of an individual struggling to balance impulses and responsibilities, Family Guy focuses on the dynamics created by family members who are extreme in their personality traits and very different from each other. Peter, the father, is impulsive, incompetent, and easily excitable. Lois is the stereotypical responsible mother and wife. Meg is a classic case of a teenage girl struggling to fit in at high school. Chris is your average awkward and immature teenage boy. Stewie, the precocious baby, is by far the smartest and most cunning of the cast. Interestingly, the screenwriters often drop hints that he is gay. He is eager to assume adult responsibilities and motivated to have
Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in the article Defining Family: Young Adults’ Perceptions of the Parent-Child Bond by Mellisa Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms.
