The most obvious difference in online learning versus traditional classroom learning is the setting. Traditionally, students would gather in a classroom where they would take notes, listen to lectures, turn in work, and take exams. Online learning, on the other hand, can take place in multiple locations at various times. Online college programs, like Bethels, give more flexibility to students because there are no set times for lectures. Videos of lectures and other important information relating to the class can be viewed at any time and they can also be viewed as often as needed. Because these lectures are constantly available, student can view the videos and reading material multiple times in order to get a better understanding of the class. Books are also commonly available within the online classroom, giving students even more access (Bethel University, 2014). Online learning is a
I chose to discuss Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning for this final project. Since 1999, the debate on the differences and similarities between traditional and online learning has been ongoing. Notably, this was the time when institutes began to use internet as a way of conveying distant education. Despite the differences that are there, it is worth noting that they are being narrowed down since technology is emerging prevalently. These facts beg the question; how do the two learning formats differ and what can one expect during transition to eLearning? Before seeking answers to this question, it is worth mentioning that I chose this topic because even though I am currently taking online classes, I wanted to research and learn more about the different benefits of online learning. Also, I am interested in researching on the major differences between online learning and traditional learning.
In a traditional setting, a student can physically talk to their instructor about the subject they are going over in class. They also have physical classmates that they can turn to when discussing about certain topics or they can even get together on certain assignments. A traditional class setting is best for someone who works better in an environment that does not feel isolated and would prefer to have their instructor right in their view so they can ask about anything related to the class. However this setting wouldn't work too well for someone who has a full time job or a family because they are held to time constraints and they have to revolve their schedule around the time they have to be in class. While some people can pull it off, others don't have that luxury. Most people have jobs that won't allow them to be on a school schedule so they can attend classes. This is why more adults or non-traditional students attend online programs because they feel it suits their needs.
However, advocates of classroom learning believe the online method isolates the students from one another as well as their professor minimizing the overall value of taking the course. They also claim that students learn better when working together with their instructor and their fellow classmates. Students learn better when they are given the opportunity to ask questions, join in class discussions, and they move the process of learning forward through their participation. Face-to-face advocates firmly believe that this kind of interaction is not possible over the Internet; and for many types of education, e-learning will never meet the potential of live human interaction in the classroom. An article in the New York Times titled, “Second Thoughts on Online Education,” backs up the points made above. A recent research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, comes to the conclusion; “A rush to online education
The topic I have chosen to focus on for my final project is Online Learning vs Traditional Learning
Online school is better than traditional school because they can work at their own pace, there is easier contact with teachers, and they have a more flexible schedule. Online school is better than traditional school because they can work at their own pace, there is easier contact with teachers, and they have a more flexible schedule.
Instructors often have multiple classes they teach, consequently they stay busy. An advantage of online classes is if you need help you just send an email and your instructor can reply. Not only can you reference later on but its possible you will have greater explanation than if you had been in a brick and mortar class. When in a brick and mortar class they have to try and equally help all students in a limited time frame. If a student is having a hard time comprehending the instructor would eventually have to move on to the next student and advise the previous student to seek help after class. A reason for this could be that they have a different learning style from what is being taught. There are three learning styles these include: visual, auditory, and kineshetic. One could easily upload a lecture, power point, and offer additional worksheets for extra practice online for the students to utilize. Traditional classroom's it don't allow time to cover all three methods a teacher either would have to pick one or give a little of all three. This could have some students fall behind while others excel. Receiving feedback helps improve a students studies. It can help you see your weakness and strong points. Online forums and lectures offer instructors a break from teaching and allow them to better critique work and offer more detailed feedback. In a regular class they have to
Online classes and the traditional classroom setting both offer many of the same advantages. They both provide the student with the same course content so there is no loss of curriculum between the two. Both demand the same time investment for learning, studying, taking exams, completing papers, and so on. Although it seems easy to think that with doing all of your school work online there isn’t any personal interaction with professors and peers, however, that is a common misconception. Online classes, like traditional ones, require a degree of contact with your peers and professors. It may not be as personal interaction as raising your hand and being called on, but you can e-mail your professor at any time and there are discussion boards and forums available for fellow students to communicate and help each other out.
College degrees now required for good-paying jobs. Traditional college attendance is expensive; however, students are using online options to defer the cost of college education. While the online options exist, there are criticisms or people that may not be ready for traditional college life. Online options provide alternative means, but criticisms from those that prefer traditional college instruction express the cons of online instruction. The option of completing a college degree is possible without going to a college campus or classroom by enrolling in a university or college through distance learning. Increasing popularity of distance education or online education
Compared to classroom learning, the interaction occurring at online courses is more international. Learners can develop online conversations on forums and interview other students around the world by using web-conferencing technology (Kruger-Ross and Waters, 2013:182). However, it is reported that students prefer face to face contact directly with the tutor who was seen as the focal point of learning, a channel through all interaction that connects ideas, builds understanding, provides feedback and gives summary immediately (Sweeney et al, 2007:316). Additionally, establishing social relations may need classroom environment (Paechter & Maier, 2010:295). Classroom teaching and learning is a complex, multilayered, and social experience, which develops friendship, connection and satisfaction among students. Social community is considered to be relatively poorly experienced in online learning due to learners’ disconnection and could probably cause isolation (Baturay & Bay, 2010:44).
The traditional classroom has advantages . They have a personality each to its own that can be expressed from faculty and student alike . That shows the personal side to education . Their is someone to set the rules and guidelines to follow ,there is someone to look up to ,there are others to interact with face to face with for seeing the reaction to that interaction.
Many students have a difficult time choosing between online education and traditional education. Both styles of education offer advantages and disadvantages to the student. There are many things to consider when making this life altering decision, such as, cost, convenience, time, social interaction, and technology. This information is meant to inform prospective students looking to further their education of the pros and cons of both online education and traditional education. Taking the steps to further your education is a big decision and one that should not be taken lightly. One should weigh all of his/her options and be well informed and certain of their choice before taking that leap.
Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today’s society. Online classes are a cost-effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it’s not a traditional learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university.
An additional element to this debate is social interaction. First off, one can’t ignore that traditional classrooms offer a great amount of much needed interaction between the students and the teacher because “seeing and interacting with your instructors on a regular basis can be motivating for some” (2017), but that doesn’t mean that there is absolutely no interaction in online courses. Once again, online education comes through by offering “pre-recorded videos of the same lectures
Nowadays, education is becoming one of the fundamental things in a human lifetime; most people are trying to achieve a higher education. As technology develops considerably, it has bearings on every area of our life, even in the way of education. The development of technology has a large impact on education. Before this progression of technology, the education system was only traditional. Currently, the education system has been changed. The development of technology has allowed the education system online along with traditionally. Traditional and online instructions are both great ways to learn. While both types of instructions have the same purpose of educating students having good skills about everything, but there are some significant differences between them such as flexibility, learning the course content, communication, and the cost.
