Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and well known works. This work tells the story of two lovers that cannot be together due to the intense feud between their families. They get married and go to extreme lengths to hide it, until they both end up tragically taking their own lives, ending the feud between their families. Their secrecy surrounding their relationship drives the plot forward and is what eventually causes their tragic ending. The were forced by circumstance to keep their relationship a secret. because of the potential consequences if their families were to discover them. They are extremely frightened of their families potential reactions, but are still willing to risk it for their love. This is shown especially in act 2 scene 2, in which Juliet stands alone on her balcony, speaking about her own inner conflict surrounding her love for Romeo, while he is listening to her from below. When he finally announces himself, Juliet is quite surprised by his presence and voices her concern for him. She says, “How camest thou hither, tell me, and wherefore? / The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, / And the place death, considering who thou art, / If any of my kinsmen find thee here / … If they do see thee, they will murder thee” (Shakespeare 73). This statement really shows how strong the hatred was between their families. Which also shows the reason why they had to keep their relationship a secret. If Romeo could be killed just for being on the property, than what would her family do if they had been caught together?
