Tragic Greek dramas featured tragic heroes, mortals who suffered incredible losses as a result of an inescapable fate or bad decisions. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a character, usually of high birth, which is pre-eminently great, meaning they are not perfect, and whose downfall is brought about by a tragic weakness or error in judgment. The three Greek heroes Oedipus, Medea and Agamemnon, who each killed a member of their family, carry most of the qualities that make up a tragic hero: being of noble birth, being surrounded by an extraordinary circumstance, and gaining self-awareness or some kind of knowledge through their downfall. This exhibits Medea's selfishness by the slaying of her sons just to cause sorrow to Jason for her own pleasure. Medea's rage also leads to her fatal flaw of excessive passion. Her excessive passion, fed by rage, leads Medea to do uncalled-for acts of violence and murder.

In the play ‘Medea’ by Euripides, Jason was right in his assessment of Medea as wholly evil in the sense that there was no justification to the murders of her children. Hatred and spite were the reasons for her actions. Medea lived in a patriarchal society where it was common for men to betray their wives. At this point, Jason is pleading for mercy, and begging for the children's’ bodies.“You who have had the heart to raise a sword against/Your children, you, their mother, and left me childless--/You have done this, and do you still look at the sun/And at the earth, after these most fearful doings?/ I wish you were dead” (Euripides 43). Jason had shown his weakness to Medea, and she took advantage of that by slaughtering her own children, so that she would get revenge on Jason. This placed Jason in an even more vulnerable position, because he had to live with no family or power, because Medea ripped it all away from him in a matter of minutes. Jason’s future had been brought to an abrupt stop, and Medea was to blame. Medea became an outcast, because she not only murdered her children, she devised a horrific plan, that called for her children to bring death to the princess and king. Medea had affected many people negatively, including people in her own family. In her acts of anger or under her horrific plans, Medea was bound to hurt someone. While Jason is looking for Medea after he hears about the slaughtering of his children, he exclaims, “For your own brother you slew at your own hearthside,/ And then came aboard that beautiful ship, the Argo./And that was your beginning... /For the sake of pleasure in the bed you killed them./There is no Greek woman who would have dared such deeds” (Euripides 43). In the tragedy Medea, Jason is faced with realization of the death of his twin sons who were killed by their, mother, Medea; he falls into agony as he laments, inspiring a katharsis in the reader. Jason cheated on Medea, assuming that it was okay with her, saying, “…I/ Grew tired of your bed and felt the need for a new bride” (18). Jason desired a bride of title so that his current children and future children could be brought up “worthily” (26). He betrayed his family and Medea’s love for another woman, causing Medea began to seek revenge. She decides to do two acts: kill her husband’s fiancée and kill her own sons. “…I shall kill my own children. /My children, there is none who can give them safety,” Medea expresses, as she plots her plan (26). Jason is unaware of this act that his wife is ready to commit. No longer does he have a fiancée, but now he has lost his heirs to the kingdom. Medea’s strength is portrayed as her madness as she takes control and decides the fate of her enemies. She is a strong character and Euripides allows Medea to have a voice by allowing the audience to witness her break from the norm of what a woman of her time is expected to do. After giving up her family and former life to be with her husband, Jason, he decides to marry a younger princess while still married to Medea. Medea realizes that women are left to face the most miserable situations and says, “We women are the most unfortunate creatures” (229). Jason feels that Medea is to be grateful for what he is doing by marrying into royalty as it will afford all of them a better life. The representation of Medea by Euripides is powerful, manipulative, and extremely smart, yet because she is a woman she has limited social power.
In the play Oedipus the King, Oedipus struggles to accept the truth and lets his temper over power him. He can be displayed as a tragic hero. His refusal to accept the truth led to Oedipus’ down fall. A tragic hero, as defined by Aristotle, “is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction.” Sophocles’ Oedipus exemplifies Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero.
