As my career advances, I have selected my preferred style of leadership. Transformational leadership suits my moral upbringing and rationalization the best. I prefer to set the example for my peers as to what is expected from all nurses instead of demanding duties to be completed. Thus, the staff can see that is not just them that have to accomplish excellent patient care and do all the hard work. Nursing is a team aspect and I am more than happy to demonstrate that everyone here must give hundred percent to their role in patient care. By setting the example, I am aware directly and immediately of the limitations of the staff, as well as, know what areas need to be improve at work. I desire for the nursing staff to believe in the mission and
As I take a moment to reflect on my time here, I have learned that I have traits of a Transformational Leader but that I also have room for improvement. I have highlighted areas in where I felt I needed the most improvement to become the Transformational Leader that I aspire to be. For the next three to five years, I plan to implement these changes to improve the way that I utilize the Elements of Adaptability, The Who, Stakes and Situation, Impact on Work Center Climate, and Ethical Behavior concepts. Understanding and effectively implementing these changes will make me a better leader for my subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
Transformational leaders are those who praise others for their work and show them how gladly appreciated they are. D.G encourages the health care members on her floor to achieve all their goals while on shift and also reward them for a job well done. She has also built many strong relationships with many nurses and physicians which she is considered highly trustworthy. Her leadership involves promoting group collaboration, nurse empowerment and increasing job satisfaction. A transformational leader displays various components. “Transformational leadership is composed of four main elements: “individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence” (as cited by). This paper summarizes the article written by Cam Caldwell, Rolf D. Dixon, Larry A. Floyd, Joe Chaudoin, Johnathan Post, and Gaynor Cheokas regarding the need for a new type of leadership in today’s social work environment, defined as Transformative leadership. The article itself varies in the definition, however in a broad sense Transformative leadership is maintaining good moral standing and sound business ethics among employees and individuals inside and outside the workplace. In today’s healthcare system, effective leadership is essential to improving and reaching organizational outcomes. A leader is someone with the ability to influence others but, an effective leader uses positive strategies to inspire employees to work towards the same goal. Leadership in nursing requires a constant effort to motivate others to become part of the organizational transformation. This can be achieved using a transformational leadership style with a focus on communication, motivation, and empowerment.
Throughout the nursing industry, both managers and bedside nurses utilize their strengths and skills as transformational leaders to develop a strong sense of camaraderie that bases its success through teamwork and development of personal attributes. As the role of the nursing manager, individuals must inspire their employees to share the same vision as they do on behalf of the organizational goals. Givens (2008) explains how transformational leadership is shown when leaders encourage followers to think outside of the box, thus motivating them to perform at higher levels by becoming more involved in their work and developing a sense of commitment to the organization (p. 11). This not only pertains to the nurse manager but to lower level employees as well. Even though lower level employees, such as a certified nursing assistant, do not own a title that gives them authority, each employee can still practice leadership skills
Per Gaudine and Lamb (2015), transformational leadership is “inspirational and based on motivating followers to achieve a high level of performance” (p. 6). As nursing promotes excellence in standard of care, this style of leadership is beneficial for a leader to demonstrate as inspiring and motivating followers will create the drive for a
A transformational leadership style along with good communication skills can be used to manage the multiples issues Hartland Memorial faces. “Transformational leadership involves anticipating future trends, inspiring followers to understand and embrace a new vision of possibilities, developing others to be leaders, and reward learners” (Hellriegal & Slocum, 2009, p. 301). Elizabeth and her associates should have the necessary qualities of a transformational leader; integrity, accountability, and motivation, so the staff can identify with them. The nurse manager could give nurses opportunities to demonstrate and experience leadership in their profession on a regular basis. Effective leadership is critical in delivering high quality care; equally

Also, mentioned by (Lian et al, 2011) a great leader with positive influential personality will give a positive effect on the job satisfaction and the performances of the employees. Perhaps, it can be assumed, poor work culture at ward X, may shaped by an autocratic leadership over a long term, consequently affecting works performance and quality of care. I previously answered this question as being transformed into the leader Christ wills or transformed according to the Holy Spirit that fills you. However following the module my thoughts have changed to Transformational Leadership Theory is a leader that attends to each follower's needs. The leader acts as a mentor or coach to the follower and listens to the follower's concerns. In addition, the leader is focused on the motives of the followers and work at helping the follower to reach their potential within the church (or organization). Presented in the module (according to Bernard Bass) four distinct factors involved in the transformational leader. This includes: Idealized Influence, is a leader who displays a strong role model for followers;
Effective leadership is an important quality to create a functional workplace environment. When it comes to the healthcare system, specifically nursing, transformational leadership is the most qualified form. Its main principles inspire confidence, personal and organizational goals, innovation and support. (Hamstra, Van Ypern, Wisse, & Sassenburg, 2014). It is very effective at enhancing the client care and professional performance of the nurse leader’s followers. (Doody & Doody, 2012). Transformational leadership has many unique benefits, that other forms of
Transformational leadership is an emerging type of leadership that is more adaptable the changing environment within healthcare and has the ability to guide and empower staff to embrace the changes (Finkelman, 2012). This type of leadership is especially important today with many nurses felling unsatisfied, or unappreciated. In order to have a successful organization, it must first have the ability to retain nurses through job satisfaction. Transformational leaders have the ability to encourage staff members to embrace the changes to come, by promoting such things as team work, and recognition of hard work done by staff members (Smith, 2011). Having the ability to recognize staffing needs along with the compassion to try and meet those needs while maintaining the functionality of the organization, is the key to future
As a nurse leader, it is important to have a strong work ethic, efficiency, dependability, and ability to organize. They should also be a well-organized coordinator, knowledgeable collaborator, and skilled delegator who practice safe and effective care. If I am to be a Unit Director, I choose the transformational leadership style. I believe that the best nursing leadership style related to lessened mortality rate of the patient is the transformational leadership, which is inspiring followers to perform beyond expectations for the good of the organization. It is also argued that transformational leadership is identified as a positive contributor to safer practice with fewer turnover trends compared to other leadership styles (How Nursing…,
This type of style strives to enhance development and improvement. Transformational leaders demonstrate model influence, intellectually motivation and take other opinions into account. “Transactional leaders used constructive clarification of expectations and corrective standards to achieve established outcomes” (Andrews, Richard, Robinson, Celano, & Hallaron, 2012, p.1104). Transformational environments in nursing have been linked to job satisfaction as well as quality patient care. A leader- staff relationship in an environment that encourages autonomy is one of the keys to staff nurse satisfaction and performance.
A Transformational Leader is a person who assesses a country, or organization/company, and recognizes the need for a change in the entity and is able to envision what this change should be. The transformational leader not only envisions the necessary change but has the required personality and strength of character that will enable them to influence others to buy into their vision and make it their own, and hence be willing to follow the leader in the quest to bring about the vision.
Being able to lead a group or someone is a very powerful action. Being a leader in general is very powerful. Leadership is an art that is painted, sculpted, and displayed in all sorts of ways. There are many different styles of leadership that correspond with different tasks. From transformational leadership to laissez-faire leadership, there are various styles throughout the continuum.
