The transformational leadership style is a more contemporary style of leadership (Dahlkemper, 2013). The work by Burns (1978) gave the leadership style currency and lead to further nursing leadership research, “due to their emphasis on relationships as the foundation for effecting positive change our outcomes”(Cummings, 2010). Leadership can be defined as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal”(Northouse, 2004) Transformation leadership works by creating a vision which usually correlates with the organisation and promotes motivation (Hutchinson, 2013; Murphy, 2005). Empathy was also noted to be an important aspect, without it the leaders would not be able to demonstrate consideration to the individuals(Harms, 2010). Other important attributes to a transformational leader includes showing self-confidence, emotional intelligence theses are all correlated with being a strong and successful leader (Harms, 2010; Hutchinson, 2013). Some important effects of transformational leadership is increased commitment to the organisation, improved staff health with lower numbers of staff with anxiety, stress and emotional exhaustion. Within the work environment reports of better role clarity and less conflict and uncertainty were evident as well as an increased productivity rate(Cummings, 2010). Transformational leadership works on the assumption that the workers become more motivated when they are encouraged to engage with their own governance and work environment, it works throughout the ranks but especially on lower ranked employees due to the shared government that transformational leaders are empowering them to do(Donogue, …show more content…

Transformational leadership works within the nursing field because the leaders raise the needs of their ‘followers’ which match their own goals and visions for the organisation, not just through charisma as previously mentioned but also from intellectual stimulation (Murphy, 2005) and individual consideration. This is important as lower levels of stress are seen in this style which have been shown to decrease the number of staff turnover but also increases patient satisfaction (Donogue, 2009; Raup, 2008; Whitehead, 2010). When a leadership style such as this has such a positive impact on the staff and on the patients also report higher satisfaction (Raup, 2008), then it seems like the perfect leadership style. But for leaders to be effective using the transformational style “…certain competencies are necessitated which require intellectual growth”(Murphy, 2005) but they also need to be charismatic, empathetic, show emotional intelligence and the right amount of persuasive as previously
