(Definition) Transformational leadership is a style of leadership where the leader collaborates with employees to identify the needed change, creating a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executing the change in tandem with committed members of the group. Transformational leadership has three basic functions. First, transformational leaders sincerely serve the needs of others, empower them and inspire followers to achieve great success. Secondly, they charismatically lead, set a vision, instill trust, confidence and pride in working with them. Finally, with the intellectual stimulation they offer followers of the same caliber as the leader. Therefore, the school becomes less bureaucratic and it functions as its own…show more content…
Transformational leadership is positively associated with schools innovative climate and it motivates followers to do more than they are expected in terms of extra effort and greater productivity. Transformational leaders are often charismatic individuals, “but are not as narcissistic as pure charismatic leaders, who succeed through a belief in themselves rather than a belief in others,” The successful transformational leader is on a moral mission; and truly believes in the rightness and benefits of the change. The selling of this vision never stops, and the followers receive constant encouragement to do their part. However, any sign that the leader manipulates the followers or has a hidden agenda will destroy the trust that is necessary for this style of leadership to be effective. If the followers see the mission itself as immoral or even trivial, they may rebel or simply cease participation. (Criticism) A key criticism of transformational leadership is that it has potential for the abuse of power. Transformational leaders motivate followers by appealing to strong emotions regardless of the ultimate effects on followers and do not necessarily attend to positive moral values.
