Transformational learning theory is another relevant concept. Onsando and Billett (2008) used it to explore the learning experiences of African refugees’ students in the Australian
Institute while Reyes (2013) adopt it to understand the experiences of South Sudanese refugees’ students in Boston community college. It was developed by Mezirow in 1970s when he studied learning experiences of some women in United States of America, who resume their studies after along leave (Reisinger, 2013). Ethnography originate from field of anthropology as a tool to collect data to understand human behaviours, and gained ground over the years in educational research as a way to collect student information to understand their school life experiences (Wilson, 1977, p.246).
In ethnography technique, participants are allow to tell their experiences, stories and oral narratives about a certain phenomenon without being directed by the researcher of what to say during the interviews. The researcher then identifies and categories data according to the common themes or relationships that emerged in the interviews and these patterns are critically analyses in-depth to establish the true claims or findings (Groenewald, 2004, p. 18).
However the researcher is just an ‘observer’ who focus more on responses or description provided by the participants. The problem with this is that human beings cannot say the truth all the times, and using ethnographic without other method cannot reveal complete reality
