The many issues with equalities have caused controversy in today’s society. For men and women, there have been many different situations and perspectives that have questioned what they are capable of doing. Equality means to have the same or equal rights, opportunities, and status to maintain similarities through other roles rather than only for men and women. In today’s society, equality has become an issue for transgender rights, feminist views, and the wavering of gender roles. Until equality is successfully reached, social development among one kind cannot be fully established. Transgender equality has faced a crisis that in some cases, cannot be explained or justified. Many will wonder about the ins and outs of being transgender and the
When discussing injustices, it is pivotal--for the sake of true progressive social change--to include all oppressed groups into the dialogue. Transgender People tend to be heavily misrepresented and demonized. Because of transphobia, there
In Abby Ellin’s article, “For Transgender Women, An Extra Dose of Fear,” the experiences of Abbie Paige, along with a variety of other transgender women, are discussed. Most notably, it has been asserted that as a result of being transgender, not only do these individuals face an increased risk of being subject to physical danger, but they also must conform to what society deems as absolute. For example, even though certain individuals may not be cisgender, or have a gender identity that aligns with their sex, they still must use facilities which their surrounding society deems appropriate. Additionally, as a result of the lack of acceptance and equality in the political economical hemisphere, people who drift away from their assumed gender roles may face extreme difficulties when attempting to get healthcare services.
Richie's Known to be the most evil person in this book, he is abusive, a drunk and an asshole to the children's mom he married. From what i have read richie is not fair to his wife he does not let her go out or be social with others she has to be home all day. while he can go to bars and get wasted. Kidd and Witten define the term transgender vaguely, stating it “describe[s] people who transcend the conventional boundaries of gender, irrespective of physical status or sexual orientation” (Kidd & Witten, 2007, p. 36). This term is a reference for the ‘other gender’ that is not particularly male or female. Currently, within the American society, there is a growing awareness of individuals who are transgender. Much of this awareness comes from LGBT movements and
In the late 1950’s to mid-1960’s, the transgender community faced discrimination such as physical and verbal harassment, denial of social spaces, and alienation in the media. This matters to us today because transgender individuals are still existing and are a part of our human population today. The community is also still struggling to find their representation in the media and in society. The transgender community is still facing a wide array of types of discrimination, from nasty looks to denied access of education. Gender identity should not be taken into consideration when determining another person’s worthiness of respect.
Throughout the past decades sex and gender have remained in major taboos and impacts within the transgender communities. Indeed, after participating in a Transgender Panel Discussion at Fresno State University, reading articles like Meet the Muxes, class discussions and the conclusion for all four sources lead to words like exclusion, discrimination, and oppressions because those define the lives of transgender, Muxes, and that for following their gender identities become the target for judgement and for countless . However, I never imagined that I could put myself in the shoes of these diverse identities until I visualized the challenges that fill their lives everyday for simply
A REPORT OF THE NATIONAL TRANSGENDER DISCRIMINATION SURVEY” which is a comprehensive survey taken by over 7,500 respondents a part of the LGBT community to discuss their experiences of discrimination that will further encourage the implementation of better protection towards gender variants. Authors concluded the:
Fifty years ago, nobody could ever have imagined how widely accepted transgender individuals would be in modern times. Countries all around the world had only ever known about the social distinction between men and women, which is known as ‘masculinity vs. Femininity’. However, now it is much more complex than that; as transgender and gender confused individuals are more widely accepted, it has become more of a case of sex vs. gender. “Sex is the biologically based distinction between men and women centring on sexual organs, while gender is the social and cultural rendering of masculinity and femininity.” (Oakley, 1972) And even though transgenders are accepted into society they still face inequalities such as not being accepted into a particular community, ostracised by families and friends,
Oppression is prolonged unjust and cruel treatment. The LGBT community has faced oppression for a very long time. Transgender individuals face oppression in a different way and are often overlooked by LGBT groups because they are finding themselves in a different way. Transgender people are treated cruel and even murdered because of their choices and decisions. These individuals are facing oppression based on themselves but also in ways such as poverty. With discrimination comes the difficulty to keep a job and a safe work environment. This group is one of the main groups forgotten about and misunderstood. Instead of facing oppression for one reason these individuals face cruel treatment just walking down the street. It is impossible
The practice of medicine in the United States sustains the marginalization of transgender people (Catalano et al., 2007). When Christine Jorgensen’s sex change was announced in 1952, many men consulted doctors to pursue successful transitions as a form of self-expression to affirm their sexual identities (Meyerowitz, 2013). However, doctors relied on their own authority to diagnose transgender issues and did not have any proven medical theory to assist the men with transitioning (2013). In addition, transgender issues in the practice of medicine are viewed as a mental disorders or illnesses (Spade, 2013) that are curable through medical transitioning (Catalano et al., 2007). Moreover, Spade (2013) discusses the difficulties in securing low cost medical care. Spade is not a textbook case of gender identity disorder, so he is having issues proving that he is a male at all times based on his lived experiences to his counselor, which undermines his transgender identity. Furthermore, the juvenile judicial system perpetuates the medical assessment of transgender people as suffering from an illness to be treated (Ware, 2013). “Uncontrollable” transgender youth, who do not have access to information about their sexuality (Sears, 1991), is placed in the juvenile judicial system by
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human
Our nation is facing a pressing issue that no one can find an adequate answer to. How do we deal with the many problems that are faced when dealing with transgender individuals? These people have somehow snuck their way into our schools, workplaces, military, and public restrooms. They should be condemned for the actions that they take against us when they argue how we should treat them.
Coming out as a transgender, identifying with a gender expression that differs from the assigned sex, has proven to be quite difficult through the ages. While the acceptance of transgender people has grown significantly higher throughout the years, people’s stance on them are still quite divided, and the uphill battle for transgender rights has proven this. Just giving transgenders the right to simply go to the bathroom they identify with has shown to be controversial according to the TIME cover Battle of the Bathroom. The TIME magazine makes sure to note the problem defiantly “far more than public facilities” (Scherer par. 9). Transgender rights are a problem that Jamison Green, president for World Professional Association for Transgender Health, thoroughly addresses in a report written by Alan Greenblatt for CQ Researcher. Jamison Green’s specific purpose in that report is to justify why transgender people deserve basic human rights like everybody else, as shown in society, through his use of facts, qualifiers, figurative language, counterarguments, and appeals to logic and values.
The transgender community makes up a controversial, growing culture in America. Promoting the idea of tolerance, self-love and acceptance, the Transgender community helps support a community that is statistically not commonly received well by the American people of 2015. Many view this uprising as a positive, revolutionary movement that aims to not only help the minority groups of America but progress mindset of all people from potentially
The transgendered women and men have always been here, however, they are experiencing oppression. But they are not purely identified as the products of oppression (Stryker & Whittle, 2006). It has been claimed by that authors that “it is passing that’s historically new.” The meaning of passing is hiding and invisibility. Transgendered people should have the freedom to live their life freely and show who
