Gender is not binary and people are fluid within a spectrum, you are not bound to the gender you are born into, which is why transgenderism in a very gender binary area such as sport, is such a controversial and heated topic in current social justice discussions. Trans people face discrimination and hatred on a daily basis even as we move towards a more progressive and accepting society. Trans people seemingly do not have a very prominent role in sports and when they do, they are called undeserved. The problem with the belief that trans people who’ve undergone Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) have unfair advantages in sports is that it’s not backed by studies (Burns, 2016), however few there are. Many organizations have set medical rules for the inclusion of trans persons into their games and if met, they are able to compete under their identified gender (Travers, 2006). Some Organizations go as far as to change their policy allowing anyone to be eligible to play if they self-identify as female (Travers, 2006). Sports inclusivity is an important part in trans acceptance, however, such acts are extreme and further propagate the belief of unfair advantage in sport. Allowing for any self-identifying female to compete no matter their physiological state sets up a playfield that is inherently unfair, and unjust, allowing for unequal work to lead to equal outcome.
