Access to reproductive technologies and genetic testing challenges traditional notions of ancestry and kinship. The understanding of family and identity is often linked to genetics and biology; however the growing industry of assisted reproduction raises questions of relations for parents/ children and others who are involved in creating the child and or raising the child. Individuals who are genetically linked like donor siblings have similarities in their psychology and in their social and moral understanding of society. For instance in the presentation that was done by the group donor siblings, we watch a video that was called, “Kids of Donor 5114”, which showed similar traits among the children aside from physical features. Because the kids of 5114 all had the same sperm donor they were able to challenge the traditional methods of family. Each kid was living with their own parent(s) far away from each other; however they were able to create a bond of kinship because of assisted reproductive technologies.
To further illustrate how access to reproductive technologies challenge traditional notions of kinship, I will be discussing the article by Pande, Amrita, “Transnational Commercial Surrogacy in India: Gifts for Global Sisters?” This article discusses the ethnography of transnational commercial surrogacy in India, and the new phenomenon of reproductive travel. The notion of surrogacy in India is that the surrogate is made to believe that she is providing a gift and that they should not do this for economic benefits. “Surrogate Gauri states: “I pray to Sai Baba (a spiritual Guru) – I have lots of faith in him.
