Sacropenia is known as an age-related disease, which demonstrates a reduction in mass and decrease in functionality of skeletal muscles. Sacropenia can lead to the tragic outcomes of feebleness, loss of independence and in worst case scenarios, death, amongst the elderly population (Roubenoff and Hughes, 2000). Therefore, identifying the elements and processes involved in muscle stem cell function is necessary in order to improve our methods of treatment for age-related diseases. The biological processes that are involved in the development of sarcopenia are identified as multifactorial (Egerman et al., 2015). Both proteins have signalling pathways that are very alike, and both bind activin type 2 receptors and initiate the activation of the intracellular mediator SMAD 2/3 pathway (Egerman et al., 2015). Furthermore, experiments consisting of GDF11 injections on a daily basis on 1-year-old mice displayed no significant increase in regenerative capabilities or satellite cell numbers. When the dosage of GDF11 injection was increased by 3 folds, the region of regenerative fibers decreased to a great extent. Also, there was a reduction in myogenin-expressing progenitors in these GDF11 treated mice, which indicates a limitation in satellite cell development and differentiation (Gamer L., 2002). The role of GDF11 on muscle stem cell aging will be analysed in further detail to assess the promotion of regeneration capacity in elderly skeletal muscle upon the inhibition of GDF11 molecule. Previous Methods Used to Measure GDF11 Levels Are Not Valid Throughout the course of experiments conducted to analyse the role of GDF11 on muscle stem cell aging, there was controversy regarding whether GDF11 increases or decreases with aging, and whether the molecule inhibits or activates muscle stem cell differentiation. For example, in one study, GDF11 was found to have the opposite effect of myostatin and suggested to reduce cardiac-related muscle hypertrophy.
