The word acne comes from the word acme meaning "the highest point", which comes from the Greek akme meaning "point" or "spot". Acne is a skin condition that may occur due to hormonal changes during puberty or even during pregnancy. Some attribute acne to external factors like greasy cosmetics and unhealthy diet. The claims of a person’s diet affecting their acne has not been verified yet. Another popular claim links stress to acne, however, stress does not cause acne but it can contribute to worsen the condition. It is characterized by visible blackheads, pustules, cysts and whiteheads. It can affect any part of the body, like the face, neck, chest, shoulders or back and can occur in people of all age groups. More often than not, people wanting an extreme solution for acne opt for laser surgery which is said to minimize the scars left behind on the skin. Another common treatment sought out by the dermatologists today is ACCUTANE. Since, it affects people of all age groups, an effective treatment is yet to be found that will have the same effect for everybody. But since, everybody’s skin is different, no such common remedy exists and only a dermatologist can examine an individual’s skin and suggest the best possible course of action for the treatment. ACCUTANE: Also known by the name Isotretinoin or (13-cis retinoic acid), Accutane is used for the treatment of severe cases of acne. It is a form of vitamin A which reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in the skin, and helps the skin renew itself more quickly. Accutane has long been questioned regarding the uneven balance of its pros and cons with the cons weighing on the heavier side. It has a long list of particularly dangerous side effects associated with it due to which it can be prescribed only by specific dermatologists in consultation with the manufacturers. It is administered orally in pill form and is advised to be taken with a meal containing appropriate fat content, normally for 15-20 weeks (3.5-4.5 months), although it is also sometimes prescribed at lower dosages for up to six months or longer.
