One's success in the flourishment through life heavily relies on many factors. However, one main piece in the puzzle of social prosperity is found in the confusing realm of human interaction. Within this realm a term known as “relationships” emerges. Relationships play a key role in structuring ones mental stability as well as ones general ability to bridge connections with others who present different or similar constructs to them. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is a book that allows us to put these ideas to perspective and provides us with a visual understanding in a time where differences among others were hyperfocused on by society. The general division of characters displays the side of the oppressed who find sentiment and understanding through healthy relationships and the value of them whilst on the other hand, the oppressors give life to carelessness and the ability to hurt others. Slim said, “‘Ain't many guys travel around together,’ he mused. ‘I don't know why. Maybe ever'body in the whole damn world is scared of each other.’” (Steinbeck 35). Slim speaks to the general issue that people have with trusting one another during the Great Depression. However, he also shows us how he realizes the strong bond the two have with each other. He commends them in their differences among others and their strength in times of hurt. On the other hand, those like Carlson and Curley can’t see this accomplishment and simply don’t understand. At the end of the book, when Lennie passes away and the dream dies of buying the ranch, Carlson says, "Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?" (Steinbeck 107). Here we can see that they don’t see the importance in the relationship that they held with each other and how emotional it really was for them. The division between those who can recognize the importance of relationships, and those who can’t, is truly important it is to have healthy
