In the beginning of the 20th century, many changes where to take place that would ultimately determine the alliances commonly known as the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente during World War I. In 1904, the Russo-Japanese War began. This war ended with a defeat for Russia, which was humiliating, but did encourage the Russian Empire to focus on the Balkans, an area that would play more dominate roles in World War I (“10 Events that Led to War One” 1). Their newfound interest in this area forced them to reassert themselves later, during the Bosnia Annexation Crisis (Trueman 1). Over the years, Germany began to grow as an empire and an extremely militaristic power (Tonge 1). The German’s power created a naval rivalry between themselves and Britain. Britain, fearing war, signed the Entente …show more content…
This put the Austria-Hungarians in a political crisis, looking for a successor. On July 28 1914, Austria-Hungary, looking to take revenge on the powers that assassinated their heir, declared war on Serbia but also Germany. Shortly after, Germany declared war on Russia and the Ottoman empire declared war on France and Britain, who declared war on their enemy, Germany. This created the two sides of World War I, The Allies: Braitain, France and Russia, and the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary and Germany . In 1915, Italy joined the Allies, Bulgaria joined the Central Powers, and in 1916 Romania joined the Allies. Finally, in 1917, the United States joined the Allies as well (“Course of the War 1914-18” 1). A notable aspect of World War I is that there was no identifiable “bad guy” of this war, however, as shown above, both sides had history and motives that pushed them to declare
World War I was a tragic episode in European history. As with most wars, there were some causes that led to this event. A few of these causes were militarism, alliances, and imperialism. The first spark of the war was on June 28, 1914 when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist group called the Black Hand. The Austrian leaders demanded an apology from Serbia, they got upset and Russia said they would help Serbia. With no apology and the threat of Russia, on June 28 Austria-Hungary declared war on them; Russia in return declared war on Austria-Hungary. Germany declared war on Russia, France on both Germany and Austria-Hungary. Finally Britain had joined France and Russia, then all of Europe was at war.
World War I was caused by several issues between European powers, the first being militarism, or the huge emphasis placed on having large and strong armies and navies. Germany is an example of militarism in WWI because Germany began competing with the British for having the largest navy in the world, as well as developing new weapons like poison gas and submarines, the latter being a great tool in surprise attacks. Militarism was also associated with the Romanticism of war; Europeans wished to fight so that they could become heros. The constant military build ups in several European countries left countries looking for alliances with other strong countries, in the event that war was to break out. Germany, Italy, and Austria created the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente was comprised of Great Britain, France, and
World War I started on June 28, 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian Patriot. The United States of America stayed neutral at the beginning of World War I because the US was a weak country with a weak military. Austria-Hungary was a part of the Central Powers and Serbia was a part of the Allied Powers. Some people thought that the US should not enter World War I because the US would lose more people in the war than the US would if the US stayed neutral but, others thought that the US should enter the war because the US needed to defend themselves. It was necessary for the US to enter World War I because of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare and The Zimmerman Note.
During the 1914’s a great event known as WWI took place and it had several impacts on the U.S. This event happened because of imperialism by Serbia. They wanted to expand their land so that they could create Greater Serbia or Yugoslavia. They needed land they did not have so they asked Austria-Hungary for a portion of land. Austria-Hungary said no to this. A terrorist group known as the Black Hand were not happy with Austria-Hungary’s response so their leader Gavrilo Princip organized a plan to kill their Archduke and family. After the dead of the Archduke, Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia for the dead of the Archduke so the declared war (Document 4). Serbia had an alliance with Russia so that if they ever entered a war Russia would have their back. Latter on other countries joined the war such as France, Italy, and Britain to aid Serbia and Russia (Document 2), they were known as the allies. Germany, Turkey, and Bulgaria also joined the war to help Austria-Hungary, they were known as the Central Powers.
After the assassination of archduke Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which caused Russia to join the war in aid of Serbia because they had a special ethnic tie which both countries had Slavic populations (Doc A). The illustration is significant because countries would have to back each other up in case other countries went to war, leading to a widespread war. Furthermore, the war between Austria-Hungary and Russia introduced Germany, associated with the Triple Alliance Treaty to Austria-Hungary, into the war . Which meant France and Britain, bound by the triple Entente, were also at war with Germany mainly because Germany cuts through Belgium “ Belgium shall form an independent and perpetually neutral state” (Doc B). The evidence suggests that allied countries had to assist colleagues in terms of conflict no matter how the conflict started. Thus, the alliance system lets World War I be a world war because when one country comes to support another, it causes tension for other countries, forcing them to join the mess and that led to a widespread
It all began with an assassination,by a Serbian nationalist on June 28, 1914 in the Balkans. The Archduke of Austria-Hungary was shot and killed in his own vehicle, which sparked war between Russia and Germany and the alliances that went along with it. The Allies consisted of France, Great Britain, Russia, The United States and Italy, while The Central Powers consisted of Austria-Hungary, Germany the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The underlying cause of World War I consisted of three reasons, Militarism and Alliances as well as Imperialism being the most important.
The war would only have been fought between the Serbians and the Austrians and the destructive consequences of the battle would most likely have been limited to those two nations; but because of the alliances that bonded many nations, an ordinary war became the first World War. Document 3 displays a graph that shows the main nations involved in the two “sides” of World War I. On one side was the Triple Alliance which included Russia, France, and Great Britain. The Triple Alliance supported the Serbian view of the situation going on; and Russia issued an informal alliance with Serbia, most likely because they were afraid of being targeted as an enemy of extremist-minded Serbia. On the other side of the argument was the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Italy, and Austria Hungary. All of this came together in a significant climax when Serbian extremists assassinated the Archduke of Austria Hungary, the heir to the Austrian throne. This was the event that officially started a war, and because the countries were united by alliances, it was a war fought by
As once Gandhi said “ I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent” associates with the World War I being the evil. World War I began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The two main sides of the war are the Allies and the Central Powers. The Allies include France, Russia ,Great Britain, Italy and the Central power includes Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire. The motivations for the countries to involve in the war is to advertise the country's military to the enemy, to make new alliances with other countries, to show patriotism and finally to progress their country economically, socially a politically.
Peace in Europe was destroyed in the 20th century due to the tensions and mistrust that the most powerful nations in the world felt toward one another. World War I had lasted from 1914 to 1918, with over 10 million soldiers dead. This tragedy started due to three prominent causes: alliances, imperialism, and militarism; out of these, militarism had the most influential impact. To begin, alliances were a major contribution to the development of World War I. The Triple Entente consisted of Russia, France, and Britain, whereas on the opposing side of the war, the Triple Alliance was made up of Italy (who switched sides later), Germany, and Austria-Hungary (Doc. A). These alliances would mean that if one of their allies were at war, then each country had a duty to support one another.
(History Place 1.). This was one of many alliances that would lead up to World War I. Some of the other alliances included Russia and France that was in reaction to the Triple Alliance, Britain and Japan’s Naval alliance, and Russia makes an agreement with Britain. All of these alliances took place between 1882 and 1910 to see who could make the most powerful alliance. During all this the United States remained neutral and was not getting involved in the tensions ongoing in Europe.
World War I began in Europe in 1914. Europe was divided as two competing alliances, Central Powers (Britain, France, and Russia) and Triple Entente (Germany, Austro-Hungary, and Italy). On June 28, 1914, the two alliances started breaking apart. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist while visiting Sarajevo. Austria declared war on Serbia as a result. This led to Russia defending Serbia. By August 3, Germany declared war on Russia and France and invaded Belgium. Great Britain declared war on Germany. By then, Europe and a part of Asia
The actions before the United States took part of War World I, were led by chronological events. It started on 1914, when Archduke-Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Which caused a rapid chain of events of accusations and threats followed by the incident that had occurred. Many countries around the world like Austria-Hungary, accused the Serbian government of the assassination attack and hoping to have used the incident as a justification of settling the question of Slavic nationalism once and for all. Nerveless, Russia supported Serbia while Austria waited for the declaration of war until its leaders had received assurance from German leaders Kaiser Wilhelm ll, if whether Germany would support Austria if there were
On June 28, 1914 Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. His death was the spark that ignited the dry grass and wood pile that was Europe. One month later on July 28th, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. World War 1 had begun. The sides were the allies: France, the UK (and their colonies), Italy, Russia, Japan, Romania, Serbia, Greece, and Portugal. The other side was the central powers: Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and Turkey. The United States said that they were neutral in the beginning, but due to the US being under attack despite its neutrality, the growing anti-German sentiment in the US influenced by historic ties to Great Britain, German policies of aggression, and American and British propaganda the United States entered World War 1 on the side of the allies on April 6, 1917
World War I began in June of 1914, there were two different powers. The war began because Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. During the war there were two parties. The Allied Powers which included Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and was later joined by the United States. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The Allied Powers supported Serbia. Austria-Hungary was
In fact, when World War I began, a conflict of views arose. The war began on July 28, 1914 in Europe. The main cause of the war was the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. The leaders of Serbia killed him. The assignation led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia. There were two main sides during WWI, The Allied Powers and The Central Powers. The Allied powers consisted of Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and The Ottoman Empire (Now Turkey); While The Central Powers consisted of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Russia, and Serbia, until 1917 when the United States joined. The U.S joined the war due to the German submarines attacking American Merchant
