Tristan Hanna Mrs.Jenkins English 1 21 February 2017 Evils of Racism: 1930 Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in a racist society in the 1930 as a 6 year old. In Harper Lee’s epic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, it takes place in Alabama during the Depression, and is narrated by the main character, a little girl named Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. Her father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer with high moral standards.The most prevalent theme is the evils of racism. One example is Mrs. Dubose 's comments to Scout and Jem as they pass her porch. She is obviously unhappy that Atticus has chosen to defend Tom Robinson, and shows her racism when she says things like "Your father 's no better than the niggers and trash he works…show more content…
They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”(Lee, 90). This stands out because Lee is referring to Tom. Tom is like a mockingbird because he did nothing wrong he just said the truth but the judge and the jury said that he was guilty of rape. The dictionary definition of racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. In To Kill a Mockingbird this is everywhere. Even the town children are being racist, even the elderly are super racist. They put black people in the same class as animals. They would always put the blacks under them. They would treat them and call them trash to their face. The blacks couldn’t defend themselves or they would get arrested and or forced to face the electric chair or hanging. They would “rig” the jury. They jury in the courthouse was mostly white men and they hated blacks. Blacks were treated very unfairly. The whites put signs the windows of their business saying whites only. The definition of evil is profoundly immoral and malevolent. This was very common in the 1930’s. Everybody that was white said the blacks were evil and that they were slobs. The whites said that the blacks would rape their daughters or their
