The captivating story of “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote is an amazingly written piece describing the unveiling of a family murder. In the book “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote the primary theme is death. Although the theme is death it is used in such a way that highlights points of other themes such as the American dream. The book has a strong sense of symbolism that adds greater depth to the story. In the book the clutter family is portrayed as the most well-known family in the town of Holcomb that is wealthy whose success is obvious. The American dream is a set of ideals for life and goals of an American citizen being success, prosperity, and upward social mobility for family and children in which the clutter family of “In Cold Blood” have. The clutter family is a representation of the American dream that fuels the plot of the story even after their death. The novel uses the theme of death to bring highlights to points of other themes like the American Dream and expresses it in depth with details about characters, their actions and the way the story unfolds off of these characters. The novel introduces the characters and the theme early on which steals the reader’s attention early on and keeps them reading. Capote establishes that the clutter family and their representation of the American dream is the center piece of the story and their death is the turning point. Capote does a great job of keeping the reader’s attention by giving different characters point of views in story, all while not straying away from the main theme of death.
