To me, reading means many things, not only the reading of text on a page but actions of others and myself as well. Most other people may not say that they will think of baseball games when thinking of how they read in real life, but I view the game of baseball that way and I like to share about how I can read in many different ways in life. Reading books is definitely not one of my favorite hobbies to do, but every once in a while I will find a good book that will catch my interest for the next couple of months. My learning experience from reading on the field has taught me another meaning of literacy that I would not have realized if I had not thought about what reading really meant to me. I can now understand how I use reading in all different aspects of my life better, and not just in the classroom but throughout my everyday activities, like baseball.
Research indicates that reading leads to better comprehension of daily tasks. This was shown in the Emory University studies, as they studied the effects of reading on the brain the neurologists also noticed increased understanding. Being able to better understand how to complete common tasks leads to better judgement. These new skills can increase a person’s functional ability which can improve the chances of you getting into a career. The University of Buffalo conducted a study that showed how reading can increase a person’s empathy levels, leading to them being more considerate to others feelings. Reading books teaches people very important lessons and morals in life. They found that this was because when a person reads, they are thinking in the perspective of the character’s point of view and overcoming many obstacles. The stories within the books also contain many morals that are taught to the reader. Since the reader is usually deeply invested in the book’s story, maybe because it’s relatable, the lesson will imprint on them strongly. Reading teaches a person many different skills and lessons that can be applied to normal life, and improve
Reading will forever continue to play a role in my education, for many reasons. The most obvious one; how would we learn if we are not able to read? In the story “Literacy behind Bars” the author Malcom X tells his story of how he improved his education by reading and studying the dictionary while in prison. “No university would ask any student to devour literature as I did when this new world opened up to me, of being able to read and understand.” (Malcolm X 642). I find his story very important, because after all reading is key to succeeding in school and life.
Books first impacted my life at the young age of 5, when I had first begun Kindergarten. Although I may have not been very good at reading, the pictures and words simultaneously intrigued me. I saw myself picking up a new book at every opportunity, and even begged my mom to take me to the library so I could check out as many books as my little arms could carry. Another thing that
I remember my mom reading to me in Spanish was I was about four years old. The smell of Cuban coffee would fill up the room every night as I was being read to. I would always play out the stories in my head I would go to sleep. This always had a positive impact as I grew older and wiser. Although I had never stopped using my imagination, especially when it came to books. I was inspired to read to my younger sister and teach her all that I had already learned. Reading is very fun to me, I find it entertaining when I digest a good book that has the right material. I have my mother to thank for having read to me when I was younger. The foundation to my interest in books started at a very young age and it was right along her side. Until this day
I have read tons books in my life. Unfortunately I was forced to read most of them. I never really liked reading just in general, But I will say that when I read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald, it really hit me.I do not know what it is but I just like the theme and the circumstances that the characters were in. So hopefully The Great Gatsby is the only book that has impacted my life.
There are a few books I have read that have impacted my life. Although, I think Tuesdays with Morrie had great impact in my life. This book touched my heart by the way the words were wrote and how it was introduced to me. It changed how I looked at life and touched me because I had experienced a similar situation. This book made me realize that I should not taking anything or anyone for granted.
Literacy has made my life extremely better in numerous ways. Learning how to perfect the skills to read and write was the best decision I have ever made. Now that I have mastered the use of literacy, reading and writing has taken me places that I never dreamed of being. Through literacy, I began understand the world more. I also have gained a greater understanding to reading and constructing writing assignments academically. Mastering the skills of reading and writing has created a structured path towards a better comprehension that I have used to advance in my current career. Finally, learning to be proficient in literacy has granted me the opportunity to adventure into new things, new information, and new methods to solve a problem and achieve goals.
The book that really impacted me was the book that I read for my Summer Reading, The Book Thief. First of all, it helped me understand more about the reality in the world that I live in. Furthermore, I can connect to the character and has dealt with similar problems. Also, it made me think more positively about the people around me and the things I do. Last but not least, this book made me wonder about and question my surroundings.
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one,” wrote George R.R. Martin. People read all kinds of books, some just for fun and others just for work. There is no limit to the books that can be found in this world, and even more are still being made now. Murder mystery, romance, adventure, action, etc. Books open the mind and create a mental movie only you can enjoy. You can decide what every individual looks like, what the scene looks like, and you can pretty much do anything when you read. For part of my life, reading did not play a major role; however, now it is a way of life.
Books kept me in suspense distracting me from my depression and taught me to love myself, when my psychiatrist recommended “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy. Books made a huge impact in
A book that has impacted my life was the book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck that my English 10 class had to read. Of Mice and Men has impacted my life more than other books have. Of Mice and Men impacted my life because it is actually among the very few books that I like that I have read. I liked the book Of Mice and Men because of the book’s description and detail. There are many parts in Of Mice and Men that showed symbolisms if you paid close enough attention to the book.
Personally, reading has had a great impact on my life. As a child in school, I struggled with reading and was placed in remedial classes. It took a few years for my ability to gain strength and to rise up to a “normal” reading level. For many years following high school graduation I did not give the subject of reading very much attention, this all changed once I had children. Reading to them and watching their young minds explode with imagination helped me realize the importance of having a strong ability to read, understand, and convey your message to others. Moreover, since I started attending the UoPeople, I have never read so much and I have found my level of comprehension has increased tenfold. On many occasion, I will have either my
As a young girl I devoured books, but not literally though. I had a voracious appetite to learn and discover new worlds that I haven’t even set foot in. That is what captivated me most. In real life we are given one life to live. However, in literature we are able to live one thousand lives without the expense or hassle of leaving our own rooms. Stories have an intricate way of reeling you in, and with an assortment of genres to choose from virtually anyone can find a piece of text that they deem fascinating. Reading also allows us to expand our knowledge and be open to varying ideas and perspectives. Therefore, I identify reading as a great way to find enjoyment but also as a useful tool for learning because it helped strengthened my vocabulary and writing skills.
I haven’t read very many books in my life, so the selection to choose from to find one that changed my life is very slim. Among those books is the Bible and none of the others have had anywhere near the impact this one has had on me. By reading the Bible, it caused me to have a better life by strengthening my relationship and connection with God.
